If the yearly running costs are around $1000 then you would need an income of at least this amount in the fund to make it worthwhile. Perhaps less would be acceptable if you take a long term view that you will be adding to it over the years etc.

At 3% return you would need 1000/3 or $33,333 to make $1000. But then you would be going nowhere. So you would need to make a bit more than $1000 to make it worthwhile.

Perhaps $50k would do it considering you may be making higher returns and you will be continuing to contribute to the fund.
