Smoke alarms in property when settle

We are about to settle on a property and did not notice any smoke alarms in property. When I questioned my solicitor he advised smoke alarms could only be enforced if they were a condition in the contract previously..... This would be difficult given we purchased at auction.

I was under the impression smoke alarms are only a requirement if the property was a rented property (this one is an owner occupier house). Can anyone advise if it is compulsory in NSW to have smoke alarms installed when property installed as I have been advised by a tradesman?

I thought the property is bought as is at auction and if there is no smoke alarms we can do ourselves - no big issue as not big cost but just trying to get correct answer...... Any thoughts or directions?

Thanks Rich

When I purchased at Woodridge at auction, this place was somewhat charred and on the day of the auction smoke alarms had been installed. This is a requirement in Qld, not that I cared I was doing that as part of the referb anyway.

Just thought it was funny smoke alarms installed after the fire
