Ultimate Medicine Thread

There have been many medical television shows that have become popular - House, Grey's Anatomy, Scrubs etc...

Which of them most accurately portrays life in hospital?

Thoughts would be appreciated :)

House is probably the most unrealistic followed closely by Chicago Hope . The opening scene of that show had a medical administrator watching an operation , not like what he saw , walk in and take over and ban the surgeon from the Operating theater ... . Never watched Greys anatomy so can't comment.

There have only two that have been in any way realistic , ER , but imagine all the episode spread out over a week instead of a night . The person behind that series , Michael Crichton , was a Doctor .

The other was a British comedy from a few years ago called surgical spirits . Who ever wrote that had worked in an operating theater . The sort of things that happened , would probably stretch the credibility for non medical people but the interplay between the anesthetist and the surgeon was spot on.

Personally I like House, followed the tv series for many seasons. However I cannot help but think that in real life, a grumpy, rude doctor who doesn't usually follow hospital protocol could retain a medical career.

Thoughts would be appreciated :)

In that sense it was very realistic , though I have n't worked in a hospital for over 25 years and it might have changed . Back then many of the specialists were grumpy and rude.

Over the recent years I can't stand certain perfumes and get sneezy/allergic. Even the Dior perfumes which I was quite immune to..

Last two days of wind has been causing hay fever! Even a claratyne didn't help enough. Long days of suffering ahead :(

I've been surprisingly good. Rixter suggested taking Olive Leaf Extract...those capsules have changed my life :D I combated the only flu I had in one day. Else I'm the first to get a cold/flu and it used to happen frequently till I started taking the capsules in June.

Thanks for that tip. Bought a bottle yesterday.

This is my normal routine.
First thing in the morning:
Freshly made Ginger, Lemon & honey mix. Kids also got used to drinking that. It actually reduced the frequency and severity of cold.

Before Lunch: Triple strength Garlic +C, Horseradish pill.
Afternoon: One Kiwi fruit.
After dinner: An Apple & an Orange

Now I have bought the ‘Olive leaf 3000’ capsules too.
Seriously, I’m not sure what else I can add (natural) to keep hay fever away!

When they say a glass a wine a day helps with heart disease, they mean a pint glass, right?

This is what you need.............

Hayfever/sinus - A chemist sales person recommended a herb, I think it was fenugreek? I lost the bottle somewhere on the Nulabour so i didn't take for long. I've just been alergy tested and allergic to mould and grass. I'm having weekly injections of the allergens for about 3-6 months. It cured hubby. I hope it works for me!

' Triple strength Garlic +C, Horseradish pill' has Fenugreek. So Fenugreek must have something.

Grass & dust also problem. I replaced the backyard (not much) with synthetic grass and hiring a cleaner to dust & vacuum the whole house fortnightly. :p

Weekly injections? I'm nervous now! Please let me know how you go.

The experts tell me grass pollen is light and spread by wind so it's everywhere. I was reading it gets on your hair, clothes and clean washing.
The allergy injection Is just a small injection in your arm, you barely feel it. It becomes a bit itchy for a little while. It's nothing like blood tests or itchy mosquito bites.

A 'reality' GP Doctor program would be a 3 hour marathon where viewers could watch a poor doctor explain the difference between viruses and bacteria 50 million times. punctuated by depressed and hyper-anxious patients having breakdowns in their allocated 5 minute appointment.

Poor baby-docs are fed a diet of pro-GP propaganda during med school. And they all want to work in the country... poor souls.

And listen to the life medical history of all the nannas and pops...you get to do that with only 3 years training as a Club golf pro. ;)

Never greet an older person with "Hi. how are you?"

Because; they will tell you.

I have found the answer to it though; if they start to tell you how bad they feel, say; "Yeah; you and me both!"

Stops 'em pretty quick.

I have learned this also with my grandparents/more mature people etc. Best you ask 'What have you been up to this week?' or if you know them well, be specific like 'Did you get a win at Bingo last night?' etc. You will far less likely trigger their pain and suffering and instead, lighten their day....and yours!

Oh my heart. My liver. My kidneys.

It's an organ recital.

I'm allergic to the glues on sticky plaster. I break out into an itchy rash. I'm post op 5 weeks now (3 hernia repairs and gall bladder removal by keyhole surgery). Pain, movement, wound healing etc all going good. My dressings however are still red, sore, square/oblong areas with a couple being quite bruised from all the scratching. I even took the dressings off early as they was making me quite miserable.

Pre op you are asked by about 6 different people the same questions - name, age, what are you here for, any allergies etc. Every time I told them about my reaction to the glue -one even said, "yeah, lots of people are effected by the glue". I said, "you're still going to put it on me though aren't you?" To which she replied, "of course; we have to put something on you!" What a ridiculous situation!

Are the plaster people aware their glues cause this problem? Have they pinpointed what the ingredient is? Are they trying to improve their product? Is there any pressure being applied by the various health people/government to rectify this problem?

One of the kids was allergic to micropore tape (supposedly hypoallergenic), however they just use another tape (not sure what) and we get a better result

The micropore made the skin red and blistered, taking it off was painful

I don't know what they're called. Certainly I'm allergic to the clear sheet they put over wounds so it is waterproof and I'm also allergic to the strips they put on the sides of this to hold it in place. The last time I removed that (very cautiously) it took skin off me and made me bleed. So glad I didn't rip it off!

For the majority of hay fever sufferers - evidence medicine supports a saline nasal flush. ie Fess or similar.
Works a treat but for some reason not taken up by pts.
