Useless banks

My brother is overseas and he got a direct debit failed notice from ANZ bank, even though the funds were in there,

now he has asked me to pay the arrears in to the account,

ive got a copy of the letter and it says the account number but no bsb

call ANZ, and they say they cant tell me the bsb because its not my account

and they suggest me to go into a branch and ask by providing the account number,

I reply "so if you cant tell me over the phone, why the hell would they tell me in person if its clearly not me?"

what a joke, I hate banks, I hate ANZ in particular

I used ANZ for some unsecured credit last year, and damn they were difficult to deal with. They lost my documents, never called me back, and didn't understand what a 'contractor' was, despite my explaining it to them and provided a year worth of payslips (which amounted to well over $200k).

Then, when I paid it all out (yay tax return) they had the hide to call and try to sign me up to their private banker system. When I told them their service was rubbish their response was that the private banker could get me access to "better parts of the bank".

A$$holes.

If the funds were there then how is there an arrears that now needs to be paid?

Privacy Act can't provide other people's account details.

Unfortunately although you are honest and trying to do the right thing there are laws against provide information because people have done the wrong thing.

Does he do internet banking so he can log on and check the account details? Did ANZ provide you with an international contact number so your brother can ring up and resolve the issue himself? Does he have any old statements at home that you could access to get the details?

Easiest way to find out the account number is for your brother to log into internet banking (or the phone app). The BSB for all accounts is fairly obvious in both cases.

I know what you guys are saying, however, he is overseas with limited internet access,

he only set the account up because ANZ wouldnt allow mortgage repayments from his own non anz account,
its his first month, no statements, no online access, have yet arrived, so its a bit of a PITA

im just helping him out, apparently theyve put it down to system glitch why it wasnt direct debited in the first place

and being a PITA bank, they wont direct debit it twice, someone has to do a manual payment, which is more BS

Who set his loan up with ANZ?

If it was a broker go to him for assitance, if it was direct with a banker go to him... either one should be able to resolve your issue pretty easy.

Which suburb does he live in usually? Pick a BSB and ask the bank...they can't provide you with the BSB but if you said 'I want to confirm this BSB and Account number' they can most certainly say yes/no: http://bsbfinder.com.au/state.php?state=NSW

Banks are a pain. Probably all of them.

However, as has been said, they do have a restriction on information that they are allowed to get back.

And it's not just banks. I've had big problems with a phone plan my daughter is on, as she's now overseas.

Exactly, who would expect a bank to give out a branch number over the phone, they are a deeply held secret:confused:

Do you know which suburb the account was setup at? If so, theres a list of BSB numbers for each suburb online.

Or if the account was setup by a broker, it probably went thru your state capital city branch. Check with your brother or your broker on whether there's any account documentation.

I understand the frustration, I too thought Aussie banks were pretty poor, however the US Banks, in particular Wells Fargo take the cake, you want to slit your wrist whenever dealing with them.

They closed one of my bank accounts in US and sent me a cheque which I could not deposit in Australia. It took me about one month to get it sorted, ie send back the cheque and open a new bank account.

They still use faxes, they give you personal business cards however the contact numbers are not correct.... it goes on and on.... Wow, glad I got that of my chest:D

I had a friend only last week had is documents from anz go missing in transit.
He was worried about identity fraud.
Anyhow all sorted now, until the next stuff up:rolleyes:

Cheers Spades.

omg deja vu

My mother has a new small investment loan of about $80 per week repayments,

she is overseas for 3 months, and we got a letter that her payment had bounced, when she has plenty of $$$ in there,

On the letter it said "you are in arrears of $X, please put it into account number YYYY" (no bsb)

a few days later, I get a phone call, asking for her, I told her she is not here as they wouldnt tell me who they were plus they were calling from a private number

after 4 calls per day on the weekend, I forced it out of them who they were.

I told them, I Know its about the arrears, on the letter it says please pay account number, but no bsb, she hasnt got any login details nor any statements since its a new loan, we have another loan with you guys, is it the same bsb???

"oh sorry, due to privacy we cant disclose it"

"well go away then"

next weekend, after a few private calls, same questions again, in the meantime, I asked my mother, who said she doesnt have any idea of the account let alone, bsb detaisl,
"can we speak to mrs TMNT,?
"um no, she is overseas for 3 months"
"can we speak to her?"
"which part of overseas for 3 months do you not understand?"
"look, I just need the BSB number?"
"oh we cant give that info out to a 3rd party"
"ok, can you email her the account details so that she knows where to pay it too"
"oh sorry, we dont send emails out"
"well stop wasting my time, and dont contact me again on this matter, if you cant even inform a customer of the account details to make a payment to you, let alone send out an email"
"When will she be back?"
"Click!"

I HATE ANZ

While it's theraputic for TMNT to vent, what are some things that should have been done to make the whole process easier?

I don't understand why TMNT is in arrears if there's money in the account..perhaps he needs to confirm with ANZ the account details from where they're meant to be withdrawing?

You could always ask the bank for a case reference number, get you Mum to call from overseas, quote the reference and thus get the info she wants and the problem sorted.

Yes, it is sometimes inconvenient for the bank not to give out information to a third party. It's a lot more inconvenient to have your accounts closed due to someone committing fraud in which the account was cleared out. Whilst the ANZ is protecting their interests in this case, they're also protecting your Mums interests. I'd be concerned if any bank was giving out personal information to a third party.
