Where can I buy good quality Business Suits in Sydney?

I'm trying to find a place where I can buy good quality suits that are reasonable priced... obviously cheaper than Myer or DJs but good quality.

Any places you recommend?

take what you will from the lack of replies...

:D I was thinking either everyone here's living off property income that they don't need to wear suits anymore, or it's bloody expensive to buy quality clothes in australia.

I spoke to a friend of mine the other day and he gave me this link:

www.mekongtailor.com

you can order suits and it costs you less than half a price what you pay here in AU, and perhaps better quality. I think I'm gonna try with one order.

Depends how many suits you want. If you're buying 3 or more it may be worth flying into SE Asia for a long weekend. I was in Thailand last week and picked up 2 new tailor made suits (Italian wool, fully lined, 2 sets trousers each suit) and 7 tailor made shirts for about $650 Australian. The quality is excellent, they fit very well, and people have commented at the office on how good they look.

Depends how much you want to spend.

I buy Hugo Boss suits from the store near the entrance to Myers in Pitt St. A good suit is about $800-$1000. I normally buy two pair of pants and one coat.

Personally, I much prefer this approach than tailoring. I have had a few suits tailored in Singapore which were very nice, but I still prefer my favourite single breasted Hugo Boss as my "interview" suit. I also have a $200 high thread count white cotton shirt that I wear with it when interviewing. And, of course a good silk tie and Italian leather shoes. A couple of thousand dollars for a good outfit isn't too much to spend IMHO given it will get worn quite a bit and can make all the difference on how you present. I spent double that on my watch...

Each to their own, but I like Boss.

Cheers,
Michael

Check out Lowes. You have to be a bit picky to get decent fabric, and best to wait for sales. Hubby buys suits there and does not look out of place at business meetings with others in their $1000+ Italian suits.

Hello Edmond

I just thought I would share with you my positive experience in regard to buying a good quality suit at a resonable price.
Recently I bought some decent suits at the Kiribilli Markets(Sydney), yes Suits at the Market, isn't that crazy?
I paid $195 for a suit which has 70% wool and got some good shirts as well.
I went previously to some shops in Sydney CBD and I didn't find anything under $500-600 quality ones.
Sometimes crazy things happen.I am still wondering and loughing, Suits at the market?

Thanks Levi, old post but worth checking the markets, thanks for the tip.

Have bought a few suits at a store in Bond Street, Sydney opposite Australia Square courtyard (in building where the ASX used to be-old Macquarie bank building). I think the store is still there (They were there about 4 years ago).

Their suits have that stockbroker/money market look about them...and are not too expensive.

Charlieandkath,

I thought that Gowings has been gone for almost 5 years now. I liked Gowings though it reminded me at times of the store in "Are you Being Served?".

http://www.smh.com.au/news/business...after-137-years/2005/12/16/1134703609158.html

"Gowings was a department store chain in Sydney, Australia, established in 1868. It specialised in men's casual clothing, camping gear and novelty items.

In 1863, John Gowing opened a drapery business in Crown Street, East Sydney, New South Wales. He entered into partnership on 4 November 1868 with his brother Preston Robert Gowing, who had been working as a storekeeper in Victoria. They set up the Mercery and Glove Depot, at 318 George Street, which John managed for £200 per annum plus half the profits of the business. This store was located on the corner of Market Street and George Street and the site was redeveloped in 1929 by John's son, Preston Lanchester Gowing, both as an investment and prime retail location. It became one of the most prominent and famous department stores in Sydney. In recent years Gowings embarked on an ambitious expansion plan, opening four more Gowings stores in other locations in Sydney.

In 2001, Gowings divested the stores to an independent listed company, Gowings Retail (later G Retail), to enable them to concentrate on their investment and property interests.Although successful in the City, their locations in suburban areas failed to attract customers.

In November 2005, after three years of successive losses, G Retail Ltd entered administration. Attempts to sell the business were unsuccessful and the last remaining Gowings store was the one in George Street Sydney, which closed its doors at 5:23pm on 29 January 2006. The building is now occupied by Supré.

P&S Michael

PS MIchael have some good Italian stuff at cheap prices.

Yeah. I've bought a few suits, shirts and ties from P&S Michael. They have a slightly different buying criteria and their Italian wear selection is good quality, and classic without being pricey.

I go to the Lakemba store and deal with Dean. He may seem like a gravelly-voice grumpy bum, but he knows his trade. Larrakin, really.

My advice would be to go out and find a decent tailor, and get a properly fitted suit.

A made-to-measure suit from a less will known tailor's shop will probably cost less than a Hugo Boss (or whoever) suit, and will fit a whole lot better. It should last longer too.

A fully bespoke suit will cost more. In London you're looking at $4000 upwards for something from Saville Row, but it will last. Prince Charles still wears suits he had made in the '60s and '70s. The only bespoke tailor I've heard of in Sydney is JH Cutler.

Failing that, find someone who can adjust an off-the-peg suit to fit. My first one came from Ozwald Boateng's shop (during a sale), and was let out across the chest, the sleeves lengthened, and the trousers hemmed so it fitted me perfectly.

There are too many ill-fitting and poor suits in the world, don't contribute to their number. :D

Aussie wool I would say.

Have you tried Gowings in CBD? Not sure if it is still about or not? Google search would confirm.

Well yes Aussie wool, since aussie wool makes up siuch a high percentage of the wool used for high end materials.. Australian wool manufactured into fabric in Italy and apparently they are pretty damn good at it. Of course we haven no such industry..

probably not what you are after but Country Road - they are excellent quality... i have about 8 country road suits (ok, i am female but i know many guys that would say the same about their mens suits) that i have been buying since 2003 and i normally buy one jacket and two bottoms. all of them look as good as new. wool, dry clean only. get one at a sale, and the store always seems to be on sale.
