Anti Procrastination Thread - Done your tax yet?

Mmm ... methinks you really do have a serious aversion to paperwork, Tracey!

Have you thought about getting a bookkeeper in once a fortnight (or however often one is needed) to do the dreaded IP stuff? I've no idea what this would cost - but maybe it would be worth it for the peace of mind.

(Please feel totally free to ignore this gratuitous advice ... coming, as it does, from someone who - many moons ago - used to get paid for preparing people's ITRs! Can't imagine anyone employing me to do that these days!!!)

We haven't been fined in the past for late lodgement, so I don't think so, Wylie - besides, the ATO owes us ... (lots).

Cheers

I have just started paying my daughter to do filing for me. She is better organized than I am, and she enjoys doing it.I hate it.
I guess we will see next year if it helps.

This is the first year we have filed late, and not sure if there will be a penalty, but there was no sense in filing it wrong.

What are the most popular things that we do with a tax return - should we be so lucky to get one?

Mine is going back into the LOC to increase my buffer - not exciting but if it wasn't for the IP's I wouldn't be getting much of a return, so I figure that's where it should go.

This year I'm getting our ITWV in earlier so will get it as we go, rather than in a lump - so no big return next year.

shares or ppor mortgage

We stick ours in the PPOR mortgage offset account...most of it usually stays there...some comes out for a holiday! I like to have that easily accessed buffer, just in case.

Just submitted mine yesterday. Keeping detailed records regularly (weekly/fortnightly) throughout the year helps making tax time easier. :D

We did ours over a week ago. Yay for e-tax.

Straight onto the fund that will turn us into squillionaires soonish. Ie, we're paying the surveyor. We're stuck now but it won't last forever.

Our accountant sent off tax returns last Tuesday about 2pm.

Both returns in bank account today (following Tuesday).

Well done ATO. It certainly pays to be organised and beat the last minute rush.

As others have stated, we do a little bit right through the year which makes everything seem a little easier at the end - always find it a little frustrating waiting for the final bank statements and health fund paperwork.

Been to the accountant (a new person this year due to a long term illness) but seemed to understand where we are coming from - the proof will be in the pudding.

My tax for 08/09 has been finished and ready to go for a month and a half EXCEPT for the managed funds part, which is STILL waiting for the tax statements to be issued.

This year will be a nice refund. It will sit in my PPOR offset for 12 months or so, but I am planning to use it to take the family on a nice European holiday for a month or so next September. In the meantime it will reduce my non-deductible interest, and I expect I'll get a similar refund next year (which should be the last nail in the coffin of our PPOR loan - yay).

So all good at the moment!:)

Yeah, this can be a killer! There's one mob that shall remain nameless that doesn't send you the statements until the end of October!!

I was surprised to get my annual super statement in the mail yesterday. Figured it already came months ago and I discarded it. Sure takes a while! Am more interested in the fiancee's statement which I figured I've also missed, but perhaps not?!

Yeah, I know. My managed fund has actually done pretty well these last few years (considering the market performance). I'm in the process of getting a new fund at the moment. Generally I start a new fund and stop contributing to the old one each time it has about $100k in it. So soon I'll have a few of these statements to wait for. Still, it's hardly the end of the world, when you think of how some people have to live.
