Crazy Business Idea no. 1

Ok, I have this crazy business idea that could make someone very rich or it could send them broke trying. Why am I giving this idea away for free? Because these ideas pop into my head faster than I can do anything about them, and I don't have the time or inclination to pursue them. If someone takes this idea and makes a mint then good luck to them. They could give me a share of the profits if they want, but in any case I do believe that what comes around goes around and I'll get rewarded somehow.

So here goes. I'm eating a salad sandwich one day and having trouble holding it all together (the sandwich not myself). The problem was mostly the grated carrot that kept falling ouit and making a mess. So I'm thinking how can you put carrot in a sandwich so it won't fall out. First thought was to slice the carrot lengthways, you would need 3 pieces to make a sandwhich. But, thinking more this would still be prone to falling out when you take a bite. My second thought was that the carrot slices should be shaped like cheese slices, maybe 8cm square x 1mm thick.

So here is my idea. Have you ever seen the machine that slices up logs to make veneers for plywood? It spins the log just like a lathe and a big blade comes down and peels slices off the log, much the same as unrolling toilet paper. (that was a s**t analogy, parden the pun). So my carrot slicing machine would be just like a log veneering machine. I'm not sure how well this would work but frankly I have enough unfinished projects to start another one. I am also aware that most carrots are tapered and there would be a bit of wastage. I'm sure that if you offered a carrot farmer a premium for carrots of a certain length and diameter they will find them.

How do we market this? I came up with three options.

1. Make an industrial machine and sell individually wrapped carrot slices. I don't know how well the slices would keep, maybe they need to be frozen, or maybe they will keep in the fridge if they are sealed properly. A bit of R 'n' D needed here. An advantage here is that you could get supply contracts for carrots of the right specs. Also the waste becomes a new market itself.

2. Make the carrot slicing machine small and cheap and sell it to the common person (aka housewife but without the 50s stereotype). You know, sell it at 3 o'clock in the morning on the home shopping show for three easy payments of $49.95

3. Later on it hit me that perhaps there is a compromise between the first two ideas. An industrial quality machine that you sell to the sandwich shops. You might even have supply contracts for the right type of carrots.

Like I said, I dunno if this idea would work or if people would buy it. If it is a good idea then probably someone has already thought of it, and it will be commercialised next week. Interested in everyone's thoughts though.

Personally I've never heard of people being put out by grated carrots that much, that they complain about them and would appreciate a solution (cutting with a potato peeler would solve the problem, btw). I could be wrong though .

Those that would be annoyed, would probably be annoyed by the slippery beets and tomatoes too, so you would have to solve that problem too ;).

Not to say the idea is lame :D:D:D.

Fresh carrot sheets to go into sandwiches? Brilliant!

Overcome the tapering problem (which shouldn't be too hard for the CSIRO, keep it domestic-sized and cheap, and you're set I reckon.

I wouldn't want to invest my life's savings in it personally (not actually much of a fan of carrots, actually, more of a "gotta eat em for me helf" kinda guy), but this could be the most cunning business idea since the bread-baking machine (another piece of essential domestic science paraphernalia that generally gets used precisely once every leap year and otherwise inhabits the deepest recesses of kitchen cupboards throughout the land.) :D

I normally just buy a wrap or a sub when I have to each lunch in the car or on the run, the salad stays in there just nicely.

Here are 3 solutions

1 - a mandolin, google it

2 - peel a carrot, then use the peeler to create long "peels" of carrot, this will give you long thin sheets of carrot.

3 - There are special peelers for thick peels available also.

from a chef..

I already have a mandoline, and so do most people I know. They are great for slicing cheese. Why then is sliced cheese so popular, and sliced bread for that matter?

Why not grate the whole salad roll instead and eat it from a bowl with a spoon.

The flavours would blend in well and it would solve the problem of grated carrot falling out of the bun :).

I usually have a sauce or mayonnaise on my sandwich.
Sprinkle the carrot cratings on top of this and it will hold the sandwich together.:)

How about a salad-roll smoothy?
Great for the old folks with no teeth left...

Hamish and Andy have a wealth of crazy business ideas. One heard the other day was to inject chocolate inside peanuts so the calories don't get digested!!

Golden opportunity for the keen investor..

Grow square carrots the same way they grow square watermelons ;)

Here is my business idea, and anyone can have it if they want, and it's probably already been done, but not that I'ved seen.

Me and a lot of my friends like sitting around big fires at night boozing on, with music playing. We are all gen X's, so it's mostly 70"s and 80's stuff, and 90's if it's easy listening. And when a song plays, it's a competition to name the band, with bonus points for the year it was popular. We go for hours doing this, but it's a real nuisance finding out the answer.

What about CD's of popular old music from years ago, and at the end of the song, the name of the band and the year it came out is said.

I'd buy something like that, but would anyone else?

See ya's.
