I haven't been to this website for a while but I stumbled on it again and found it is a great source of rental data broken down by postcode:

Go to the left side: Rent & Sales Reports -> Rents, Metropolitan Postcodes, sorted by Postcode (March 2006, PDF 42Kb)
Shows median rents by postcode, also differentiaties between units and houses as well as shown quarterly and annual changes.
