What's your budget? If you're reasonably handy you could replace the benchtops, doors, draw fascias, pantry door, chase the plumbing down to install a mixer and replace the sink for about ~$2k. I wouldn't paint it.
go for a basic fresh white colour everywhere and add your colur with a red splash back or something similar(or tiles).
white always will be able to mix with other colours.
Everyone was using stainless steel splashbacks a while ago, but they are starting to look a bit ordinary now.
have you heard of the reno kings? they have a lot of good tips for renos. http://www.renos.com.au
I would also go for an off white colour, but not plain white as it shows any marks or dirt too easily. Something like Dulux Whisper White or Antique White USA would work well.
For the splash back tiles or paint, the natural stony colours are in at the moment and appeal to most people.
They had a kitchen makeover on Better Homes and Gardens on Friday. They said the bench top (laminex) was around $80 per metre. I got a quote from Barry's Kitchens and it was $180 per metre...

this figure is for 300mm wide square edge benchtops , no laminate fixed (blanks)
in reality 600mm wide laminated tops are $135.00 wholesale from the laminex pricebook ,so a slight deviation from the truth seems to have happened here ,
specialist benchtop companies will charge around $100.00 including gst ,then you have to add joins, seen edges onto that
