Meeting Aboriginal people

Years ago I used to busk on the streets of Sydney , while I was going through uni .

Every so often a tourist would want to take a picture and as I was fulfilling a role as an entertainer I had no problem with that .

Nowadays if a stranger came up to me at work or on the street without a specific reason other than they wanted to take a picture of a doctor or a white person , I'd refuse and think they were insensitive .

If you have no other reason to wanting to take photos outside they are aboriginal I think you are being insensitive .

Having worked in Mt Druitt for 19 years and had numerous long term aboriginal patients and some who I would have classed as friends , I think if they were approached by request they either give you a strange look and say nothing or tell you to f.... off .

If you want to make connections with the aboriginal community , do it , but not because you want to take pictures of them .

If on the other hand you want extra's for a movie $$$$$

or indian / dark skinned person working with you do this.

Why not just apply some black boot polish to your face? Your sure to trick the elders, after all, all non white people look the same. Perhaps you could get away with taking a Chinese person with you as your hand bag.

Perfectly fine to publish a photo of someone taken in a public place without their consent. Consent is only required if the photo is being used for commercial purposes.

As long as they are not engaging in a private act ;)

For example, it is an offence punishable by a fine or imprisonment to photographa person to provide sexual arousal or gratification if the person is undressed or engaged in a private act in circumstances where a reasonable person would reasonably expect to be afforded privacy, and he or she has not consented to being filmed. A private act includes using the toilet, bathing and engaging in sexual activities not ordinarily done in public. Similarly, the Surveillance Devices Act 1999 (Vic) and Surveillance Devices Act 1998 (WA) make it an offence to photograph a "private activity" without the consent of the subject.

The Crimes Act 1900 (NSW) also makes it an offence punishable with imprisonment to be in or near a building with intent to peep or pry upon another person. It is also an offence to stalk a person with the intention to cause fear of physical or mental harm. In serious cases, this may lead to an application for an apprehended violence order (AVO).

Also be aware that any photography construed as child pornography can result in criminal charges. For example, the Criminal Code 1899 (Qld) makes it an offence to take any "indecent" photograph of a child under the age of 16 without legitimate reason. You could face significant jail time, especially if the child is under 12. Similar provisions apply under the Criminal Code (NT), Criminal Code 1913 (WA), and the Criminal Law Consolidation Act 1935 (SA).

Read it as you wish. That statement came from working directly with indigenous communities setting up neighbourhood projects and camps over a period of 4 years in both Redfern and Wagga Wagga.

I dont know why you want to take there photo if your in the city there just going to look like any other person. No aboriginal really lives like they would have 100 years ago anymore. Try aurukun if you want a real eye opener.

I agree. Aurukun will open your eyes. KingChevy, I'm temporarily in Weipa. Getting into the barra? Perhaps I can send a photo down of the undersized fish kept, and the litter left by the traditional owners. It's not that romantic, but this is 2015.

Yes it is gut wrenching what goes on up her. they defiantly do not take care of the environment.

Come to northern NSW where I live. 20% of everyone you talk to would have a bit of aboriginal in them. They live just like everyone else and half of the 20% you wouldn't know they were aboriginal.

If you want to meet full aboriginals, go out into the outback. Way out.

See ya's.
