The mine subsidence board in NSW has maps:

Lots of highly urbanised areas of the Hunter Valley are built over old coal mines so it doesn't have to be an issue (although it can, such as in parts of south Lake Macquarie where houses have been damaged). Also there may be development limitations put on land by the Mine Subsidence Board, as is common in parts of the Wyong Shire of NSW.

Try doing a search on the Newcastle Herald which had a front page feature
on a couple in the Hunter and mine subsidence a few weeks ago.

Don't be fooled by the Mine Subsidence board , they are not there to help
you they are there to defend the mines. They are paid to operate by the
mines.

Ask the poor residences in Chain Valley Bay what they think of the MSB
who are still seeking compensation for illegal mine workings under the
shoreline 20 years ago.

A lot of the Newcastle suburb including the highly priced outer suburbs
have experienced mine subsidence, Its not uncommon for some over the
years to wake to find holes appear in their backyards whereas the residences
at Chain Valley found their home being part of Lake Macquarie.

The current mine workings under Lake Macquarie are estimated to subside
by half a meter.

Used to own a property at North Ipswich which was directly over the old Klondike Mine. The stae gove department: google DERM will have searches.

The shallower the mine, the older the workings, the thicker the seam and the number of workings all increase the damage. Bundamba and Collingwood park are two areas to watch out for.

undermining in Ipswich

To check a property in Ipswich city, go to the council website www.ipswich.qld.gov.au and check their PD Online service. If you need a mining study on your site it will show up. All areas that are restrained by coal mining will show up on this site.
