Moving to Perth or Melbourne

As oppose to NRL as that has little followers here :) You can enjoy AFL, Rugby and Soccer and barrack for any side from here but NRL you'll be lucky to find someone who knows who the Rabbitoes are.

Wait. You're saying Perth has better AFL following than Melbourne?

No way! I'm saying that if you follow AFL you'll be fine here (or Melbourne), but if you follow NRL and avid supporter than most Perthies will have no idea what you are talking about.

Rugby Union gaining a strong foothold in the west, team doing well now they have rid themselves of the mercenaries. International sponsorship, purpose built training setup in Mount Claremont would suggest they are doing just fine.
Don't suffer from the fair weather supporter syndrome that the AFL does in the west.

Melbourne
Horrible weather, great entertainment, cold and wet most of the time, city feels dirty, great public transport, sporting scene is very good, easy to access other east coast states, quality un crowded surf.

I think you've been away from Melbourne for too long...

Melbourne has it's faults but I wouldn't say "cold and wet most of the time" is one of them - average rainfall is actually much lower than most capital cities. And while it definitely gets cold in Winter at the moment we're having beautiful Autumn days and the Summer was fantastic as usual - plenty of hot days spent by the pool. Although I've never lived in Perth, if you look at the average temperatures between the two, there's only a couple of degree's difference in daily minimum temperature.

If you want to be happy, you need to learn to love bogans. Find the bogan within - there'll be one there.
You'll never get away from them (us) in Australia.

I'm originally from Sydney and now live in Melbourne.

I love Melbourne and it's probably the best decision I made. I think it is cheaper than Sydney especially housing.

Good thing about Perth is you are close to Asia. You can be in Bali for $150 each way & it's still the same time zone.

Thanks for the feedback guys

Can you please specify what makes melb better than syd?

Yeh i noticed that when i moved over from NZ about 4 years ago, i tried to spark up some rugby union/league conversation and just got blank expressions.
Slowly starting to get into AFL though. Freo and North Melbourne supporter because thats where i have Properties Haha :D

My wife (GF at the time) is from Melbourne and we were (in 2008) thinking either she moves up to Sydney or I move down to Melbourne so we started house/unit hunting both in Sydney and Melbourne and for the price I could buy a 2 bedroom unit in Sydney I could buy a new 4 bed house in Melbourne within 20 KMs of CBD. So affordable housing was definitely one of the main reasons.

Other reasons
Roads are bigger and better - I use to live in Parramatta and if my GF asked me on a Friday evening (or any evening) let's go to Sydney City for dinner I would say lets just stay local as it takes bloody long by car but in Melb I can be in city in 20 mins (off peak). Melbourne is a planned city unlike Sydney and it doesn't take too long by car off peak considering the size.

I'm a Sport fanatic & melbourne is the best place. I watch both NRL & AFL and I think we have the best stadium for AFL (MCG) & NRL (Aami park). I've been to many Melb Storm games and AAMI park is by far the best stadium, even better than Suncorp in Brisbane.

Gym membership is heaps cheaper.

Coffee definitely tastes better here.

In general I just like the lifestyle here.

Melbourne is my home town, So I will choose Melbourne over Perth.

my observations coming from a person who has lived in Perth and Melbourne.

Perth-
Perth is a nice city, good parks, great weather, good beaches that are not far drive from the city.
No Trams, so inner city Transport is hard, however Perth does have the CAT buses which are free and run certain loops around the CBD and surrounding suburbs.
Fremantle is a nice place, as is the Swan valley, the foreshore etc.
Perth lacks that entertainment buzz, I was only in perth for a work course and trying to find late night places open in the city is still near impossible especially on a monday night. However it has got better with the Casino upgrade, more theatres and inner city bars, slowly getting better.
Great place to live for a family However......
Cost of living is higher, everything is inflated, Steak and chips at the local pub $40, rents are quite high too.
Also the Isolation is a negative, unless you love taking holidays to asia, than its perfect as it can be more cheaper to go to bali than fly home to Sydney. There's nothing else to do unless you go "south" to the surf and wine region.
Bogans are in Perth you only have to take a trip through the Thornlie or Gosnells region, or to the "Saint Hotel" located at innaloo. There youll meet a new type of Bogan "CUB" Cashed up Bogan.
Football wise unless you support Fremantle or Eagles than youll struggle to find any news on other teams or watch games unless its a blockbuster Melbourne game.

Melbourne

Great City, Diversified Entertainment, so much to do and see, endless options
Big Sporting city, with AFL, NRL, Soccer, Ice Hockey, Netball, etc etc
Great Transport, Trams, Trains, Buses.
You can go east, west, south or North and find Tourist areas to venture out it in, like Yarra Valley, Goldifelds Region, Great Ocean Road, Philip Island.
Located on the east coast, so a short flight to any other Capital city.
Housing and rent is reasonable, depending on where you want to live ofcourse.
I live in Ascot Vale approx 6kms from the city centre and Pay $400pw for a 2x1 House, which I feel is reasonable for location.
Weather wise, Yes Melbourne does has bad weather sometimes, and even in Summer some days feel like Autumn.
Finding a good beach is a few hours Drive, unlike Perth.
but thats all I can really Fault about Melbourne
It all depends on your Current Situation.

Im a single 30yo so Melbourne suited me way more than Perth ever did, just for entertainment and Sporting reasons, but If I had a family, I would be happy to live in Either.

Just my 2cents

It really depends on your lifestyle, your partner, your interests and your field of employment.

I think Melbourne has a terrific coffee culture, it's terrific for sporting events
And has a vast amount of restaurants which makes for a lot of entertaining and happy evenings. My god there are a lot of very average suburbs, the weather is awful, the place is glum and it's quite dirty there too... But it'll cost you a lot less to buy there with a decent parcel of land and close proximity to the city. The overall move would be cheaper.

Perth is a long way away, moving costs will be tough. It's expensive to buy in nice suburbs, similar to Sydney prices. Stunning beaches, lots of nice bars without "issues", a growing list of really nice fine dining restaurants, terrific weather(not as good as Brisbane) , terrific family lifestyle...

But... I'll throw a spanner in the works, I think you should move to Brisbane. Awesome weather, prices rising but still ok, lots and lots to do... My goodness, it's fantastic for fishing, 4wdriving, theme parks, surfers, other beaches etc etc. would recommend that place to anyone for a year or two.

I love being outdoor, but it seems have to pay more for perth. It doesn't solve the cost of living problem.

Freemantle is really beautiful.

I have 2 kids. How about the education and crime rates in perth and melb? Any feedback please?

Brisbane is not on the list due to flood, hurricane and it is boring.

Thanks wirra.

What do you do for living? Can you find work in either Perth or Melbourne?
