PM notification

I find it very easy to overlook a received a PM I realise there is a indicator on the top right but I often don't notice it until a week later because it's not in your face and because I don't often receive PMs.

Howerver, if the text was in red or flashing that would make it instantly obvious. In another vBulletin forum I visit they have the popup message configured so there is no way you can overlook the fact that you've received a PM.

Maybe I need to configure something on my end

Just go into your user cp, you just haven't set up any of your PM notification options. You can either select to have a popup, an email or both.
