Trip Melb/Victoria

Hi All
I am in the process of planning a family trip in Feb 2014, I know a little early, nonetheless I like to be organised.

Firstly, want to spend 3 days in Melb, hire a car and travel around Victoria. Total of 2 weeks.

Been to beautiful Melb many times, love the place, would move over in a flash:)

Anyway, now I need to work out my itinerary, I am not very good with this stuff, but I am told I must go to:

Beechworth

Melbourne, will be purely, shopping, dining perhaps casino.

I am after relaxing holiday while taking in some magic sights, any help would be appreciated:) I guess we would be staying at various B&B along the way.

Those from Melb/Vic what do you recommend on our little trip, how would you do it. I am assuming the weather will be pretty good during Feb.

Cheers
MTR:)

My friends have a holiday cottage at Inverloch and I love the drive there and the quiet beaches and estuary.

You should go to Dromana - and get some tyres at BVs :) Dromana is lovely.

All good... food for thought, will google this.

In Melbourne go to all the foodie delights :)

Any of George Calombaris restaurants - I like Helenic Republic and easier to get into

Shannon Bennet's Vue de Monde - even if just for a drink in the bar for it's amazing view at Rialto. There is Cafe Vue in Heide http://www.vuedemonde.com.au/cafe_vue_heide

I'll be in Melb in Nov for a week with the kidlets and will try and do Cafe Vue and Helenic or one of GCs more relaxed kid friendly ones :)

Pretty standard fair for tourists to Victoria is to go to:
Phillip Island
Great Ocean Road
Yarra Valley (Vineyards, organic produce etc)
Food tourism (Try the cafes, new trendy restaurants in CBD, ask me for recommendations)

We did the Victoria Road trip last January with 2 kids aged 8 and 10 from Sydney.

1N Wangaratta stopover only and could have been passed over
3N Melbourne
2N Phillip Island for penguins (prebook mid tier + take your own dinner to get a good viewing spot) and the water sports
2N Ballarat inc Sovereign Hill
2N Bendigo inc Deborah Gold Mine
1N Echuca (never been and really not that much of interest if not for staying on a paddle steamer)
2N Yass have a look at the Carey Caves - they are fantastic

Melbourne tends to be warm but can be very hot in February. If very hot you might like to escape indoors e.g. NGV and ACMI galleries at Fed Square (both usually have activities for kids); Melbourne Museum and world heritage listed Royal Exhibition Building Carlton; Jam Factory cinema and boutiques in Chapel Street; Chapel Street bazaar if you like collectables and iconic Astor cinema in St Kilda. If slightly cooler the beaches are a great outing e.g. ferry to Williamstown, tram to St Kilda or train to Brighton or Sandringham.
One of the events later on in February is the White Night Festival which is a free arts and entertainment spectacle. I also like the markets including the farmers' markets - there's usually a couple on somewhere each weekend.

As regards things to do in regional Victoria the Great Ocean Road is spectacular; the goldfields region is fascinating if you are interested in Australian history and like Victorian architecture.

Try and organise your city stay over around a Wednesday night and get to the Queen Victoria market for their night markets they run over summer. Amazing markets and food.

Hey MTR. We are doing this. http://goo.gl/maps/rJnTM

2 weeks over the Christmas break. ( We did Great Ocean Rd a couple of years back.)

We have daughter in Melb and son in Wollongong so 2 nights in each of those then trip around in between. The points on the map are suggestions only :). We have only booked Melb and Wollongong

I second the Great Ocean Road...it really is worth seeing.

I spend a lot of time at Cape Woolamai at Phillip Island, which I love. The beaches are really good and the Penguins and other attractions are the added extra.

If its really hot and it can be in February, it is always a bit cooler down there.

The Queen Vic night market is well worth a visit, the food and music is great, I live in Melbourne and wouldn't miss it.

Enjoy your time in Victoria

Don't forget The Dandenongs.
A ride on Puffing Billy
Devonshire Tea at Miss Marples
Feeding the Parrots at Grants
Dinner at The Cuckoo
Stay overnight in a local B&B
Next Day food and wine around the Yarra Valley.

Don't forget to go to the Co-op Fish and Chips Shop at San Remo, before going over the bridge to Phillip Island.

The best fish and chips anywhere and if you are there around 11am you can watch them feed the pelicans
