where to buy PPOR in Perth area?

Any takers on South Fremantle? Wasn't keen on North Coogee as it's new estates and cul de sac blingy.

South Freo is great and not at all dodgy. When we arrived 25 years ago it was definitely suspect, but all we could afford. It has come into its own after being the poor relative of Fremantle. I've tried to live elsewhere but it has me in its clutches!

North Coogee is an abomination!

Walker Street is well-positioned - a short walk to cafes, restaurants and food shopping and, most importantly, South Beach. Beaconsfield Primary is quite close. I couldn't recommend South Fremantle Senior High School. Closer to Freo there's John Curtin High School - I believe it specialises in acting, music, etc.

As for horses - South Freo used to be a centre for training horses and I think some are still exercised on the beach just south of South Beach :).

What else would you like to know, Lizzie? Ask away.:D

cheers

lizzie gone much searching on google maps to get an idea of the immediate local area and proximity to the city etc ?

yup - have google maped and real estate . commed all the way over Perth.

Upper Swan (acres in wine/horse country) or South Fremantle (walk to beach/vibrant cosmo) are the two areas that appeal from a distance, that also fall within the budget.

I suspect the horses at South Fremantle used to come from the acreages at North Coogee that has now been carved up into 300m2 resi blocks.

South Freo?

I have to thank you, Lizzie! In researching the tenuous horse connection with South Beach I found this fascinating document : http://www.planning.wa.gov.au/dop_pub_pdf/european_heritage.pdf. Check out page 44.

The border between the City of Cockburn and the City of Fremantle is at the southern end of Walker Street - which will go a long way towards explaining the presence of South Beach Estate!

Despite the boundaries, we still regard the best of the Cockburn coast as "ours" - and this includes C Y O'Connor Beach and the old South Fremantle Power Station.

There's a property on Rockingham Road that I've wanted for ever - and after reading that document I now know that it's Marks House and full of history.

I should warn you about the Heritage Nazis - I have no idea about the Walker Street house, but could find out if it's listed if you wish.

cheers

There were stables all over South Fremantle - in fact one of my houses, built in 1903, was built on the site of earlier stables. Crumbling stables are quite a common sight.

OK - close to airport, city, river, train, (gets you to Perth, Freo, Subi, Claremont etc) good range of block sizes and good schools. I'm guessing these labs are in the Belmont area?

So I would say take a look at Mt Lawley / Maylands / Bayswater. In that lot you've got most budgets covered (with distance from CBD) and have a choice of Perth College (girls) and Guildford Grammar (boys) if you want to get all hoighty toighty about the education! I have a soft spot for Coolbinia / Menora as well but I like a big block and don't mind a bit of art deco! Some of those suburbs have shared private parks out the backyard that can only be accessed through the back fences that border them - nice.

South Freo is nice but I like a bit of elbow room, which would see me more in Hamilton Hill but then you may not like Spearwood / South Freo High, although I know some fine upstanding citizens who are former students (they're just few and far between!).

Otherwise Floreat / Wembley areas give some decent value (particularly Floreat for block size) and proximity to a multitude of more respectable education options.

Walking distance to the beach, combined with a decent house / block would be out of your price range I suggest without going a long way to work / airport.

And didn't anyone mention that if it's not double brick and tile it's not a real house?

You must like chocolate Lizzie. I notice both those places have Margaret River Chocolate Factory.

Just from some of your posts and renovation pictures you remind me of my best friends friend, Yvonne, who renovated this cafe. She lives in horse country now on acreage and really sold the area to me! She loves it! http://www.padburysrestaurant.com.au/about_us.html

South Freo?

I don't have a problem with that if it fits the budget.

I'm more inclined to agree with Dazz & Aaron, the golden triangle is the go, but you will need to go hunting for that bargain though, I reckon you have time.

Regarding the beach, and this is my opinion only, I would never have beachfront over there due to the blasting wind every arvo. Mornings would be fabulous but the arvo you will be inside looking out at windswell & foam.

Best water views property would be on the river pretty much anywhere that suits you, but that golden triangle is really really really nice and closest to beach and river. ;)

South Freo is better (than triangle) for access to airport via the motorways and only 10 mins to the (IMHO) better beaches around Cottesloe.

You will notice the difference along the coastline compared to Newcastle. No big cliff face headlands to speak of, plenty of long straight stretches, but lovely white sand and beautiful clear azure water.

Can't wait for Feb when I'm there next.
