benchtops

I have a 33mm particle board benchtop (factory miscuts) to install in a couple of weeks and I was wondering if it is worth sealing the back edge prior to installation. I will do the usual silicon seal after installation.

The kitchen places say it is likely to be HMR and therefore not needed. They have some in a jar of water for 10 years and it still looks OK.

Hi Stirling,

It would be highly unlikely to be anything other than HMR.
It is possible to usually see a green fleck in the board to confirm it is HMR.
No need to seal the back edge .... ( usually fails 1st around the sink cutout anyway ) .... :)
just go ahead and install it.
10 yrs? ... i seriously doubt that!

Hello Striling,

Maybe you could put some silicon along the back edge of the top before you push it agaist the wall? As you push it the silicon will be conpressed and form a beam along the back edge and seal the edge of the board.

Maybe this is not needed but I can tell you that a little amount of silicon will cost you less than having to replace the benchtop in ten years and 2 months

Good luck
