cutting doorway into limestone wall

i have heard to cut a doorway into a limestone wall you cut a slot and put a piece of angle iron in as a steel lintel then cut your doorway out underneath
is this correct?

how deep does the angle iron need to go?
how far below the angle iron can the cut go?

as jims replay, a lintel
in stone must be 100% of the wall
lintel, as 2 pieces, one inserted for ~60% of wall thickness from each side (overlap)
limestone is not tension stable, and heavier than brick so you will need a competent person to calculate the thickness of steel to support the weight
ideally a recurve section to properly support without allowing flex

Bman depending on which state you're in, you may need a building permit too.

I'd get an experienced person to do it, otherwise the whole thing could collapse.
