do dentists scratch/chip teeth with their sharpish tools?

My dentist was raving about what good teeth i have.

I came home to a tooth that she must have chipped and then chiseled straight. I was horrified
and another2 teeth at least that also i can feel having sharp broken edges that werent there before. I've noticed and wondered about this before about whether dentists in fact chip or scratch teeth with their sharp tools that they use to clean or to check if there are holes in teeth.
has anyone else noticed this.

Francine.

Yeh i thought that before.

However before getting worried, and relax...

Explainations could be.....

They have cleaned surefaces that now feel different
Could have chissled for astetics
other explanations beyond my mental capabilities.

I hate when you get fillings from dentist and get home and think... aw... wish it was done like this instead or that instead...

I saw my elderly neighbour today, whom just had all her teeth ripped out and replaced with falsies. All teeth grinded and cut out, and gums stitched up. Was enough to turn me off smoking forever.

So things can always be worse Francine. :D

I can tell you one thing for a fact: they can break off the little saw tools when doing root canals, leaving the tip embedded way up in your tooth.

Fortunately it's not big enough to trigger aiport metal detectors though...

They do gently scratch the surface of teeth to check for any cavities (ie. soft, sticky spots) certainly no chipping or visible scratching should occur, nor should any filing take place without your permission.

GreatPig it's unfortunate that you had a root canal file snap off it your tooth. It's not a common thing, but of course can happen and is no fault of the dentist as some teeth just have curvy shaped roots. Usually tricky teeth are referred to a root canal specialist.

Bah, dentists. Last time I went to one of those (as an audience, really should go for my own benefit one day) they cranked out the pliers and ripped out a tooth, root and all. Child was adamant it didn't hurt, the other half passed out and needed fanning and resuscitation!

Don't wiggle your teeth prematurely, mmmkay. They go black, look awful, and people in white coats want to pull them out with pliers. Hardly worth it for a gold coin from the tooth fairy.

One of the things that motivates me to more wealth.

Having worked around older peolple (mostly pensioners) my whole life, you see this all the time.

The rugged and buggered "battler", smoker, falsies. A life of less.

Never gunna be one. Their lives are sad. Oh yeah; they'll say they're happy, don't need money ra, ra - BS.

I'm gunna do 2 things different - take care of my teeth, and get rich enough to be able to afford those Hollywood Celeb type crowns or whatever they're called if it gets to that stage.

She's probably paid for about 5 sets of crowns in her life with her smoking.

Sad. I do feel sorry for them, but part of me doesn't.

dentists have to re-sharpen their tools quite often - the enamel on your teeth is SO strong.

just ask the dentist to "buff them out" - i had the same issue and now they're fine.
