Dog smell Carpet!!!

The carpet has strong dog smell due to tenant's dogs. I ask a cleaner to deordourise the dog smell from carpet but the cleaner advised that he cannot guarantee that this will get rid of the dog smell as he thinks it has got into the underlay in which case it would need replacing.

Do you have any idea to get rid of dog smell?

i.e. Open the doors and windows
use strong room disordour liquid.

Was that a household cleaner or steam carpet cleaner? The only thing i could think is to have the carpets steam cleaned, that will clean the carpet and get into the underlay.

tell you the best way...replace the carpet..................you will never get rid of that smell...rainy days the smell will come back i promise.....

dogs belong outside..full stop.......

i love dogs but they have their place in my home and its not inside...ever...

I'd best not let my little poodle read this post. He would be most upset to hear that not all dogs get to live inside :D.

If the odour is from urine, you must use an enzymatic cleaner; no other cleaning processes are likely to be successful. I have heard that this product is excellent:

Urine Free

The product is relatively inexpensive, can be applied by anybody, and they offer a money-back guarantee on removal of pet odours.

I recently bought an IP that had been owned by smokers for a number of years. A good cleaning company can get the smell out, however they won't guarantee it as there is a chance they may not completely get it all. 9 times out of 10 they will though.

I haven't experienced the smoke smell again since I had them clean the place. I did repaint walls and ceiling too, but in your case carpet cleaning should suffice.

I have the same problem in four year old carpet, stains in every bedroom, turns out the dog was never outside....only way to get rid of it is to replace carpet and underlay.

The tenants told us they are spilt coffee stains, they couldn't explain the smell ...but if that is they case, then I'm glad I'm not drinking the same brand of coffee they are

As Perp said.

Sprinkle an enzyme-containing pet-odor-neutralizing powder (available at pet stores or your vet's) on the affected areas. Pet-odor-neutralizing powders contain live bacteria and enzymes that digest odor-causing protein and bacteria, permanently removing it from the fibers in your carpet.

These products also contain a mild cleanser that can help remove discoloration. Alternatively, you can use borax powder or baking soda, but they are less effective in eliminating stubborn odors.

Cheers,

Bazza

Thanks a lot Bazza

However, I am interstate and cannot treat this by myself. Do you know any professional cleaner use this chemical for cleaning?
Thanks

I would suggest calling a few carpet cleaners in the IP's area and see if they can treat it with this type of product.

Before you do anything - is the tenant still there?

If the tenant is there - get your agent to pull our the Pet Lease they hopefully signed which lets them know THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE!

And if they are there - you will only get more stains.

If they have gone - your agent should have done something about this within the 10 day Bond Claim time frame. Anyway......... not knowing exactly where the property is, I suggest you contact Jason at Sady's Carpet Cleaning. This is a guy who knows his stuff and has the right deodoriser and cleaners specifically for pet urine. He is based in Bacchus Marsh but goes everywhere.

I would honestly replace the carpet if its an old deep smell, can you charge the tenants? Try a good clean first but the carpet is most likely ruined, the smell would be deep down inside the underlay.

We had the same problem with cat urine, it just wouldnt clean away & even when we thought the smell had gone, visitors would come over & embarass us, reminding us the place still stunk.

Did you clean with an enzyme-based cleaner?

Honestly, it's so frustrating hearing people say again and again that you can't get the smell out, when at least a couple of people who've obviously investigated this matter in some depth have said: nothing other than an enzyme-based cleaner will work. It doesn't matter how strong the chemicals are; if they're not enzyme-based, you're unlikely to get a good outcome.

If you elect to replace the carpet without having tried an enzyme-based cleaner, you won't be able to get anything from the tenants. You could, however, get them to pay for enzyme-based cleaning, and are likely to get a good outcome.

The remedy for stained carpets is stain removal, not replacement. Trying to get rid of the stain with inappropriate treatments and then claiming the carpet is "ruined" is not adequate.

Used many sorts of cleaners & carpet cleaning companies that specialised in urine removal. I cant state if they used enzyme-based, but for the continuing cost vs outcome it was just ripped up.

To state you get frustrated over people saying you cant get the smell out is asuming you 100% know all urine situations. The carpet was smothered with cats urine, for years on end (not by our cat), we even had to give the concrete slab under the underlay a good deep clean once it was ripped up. Maybe all the products were incorrect, who knows, but thats what we did!

Back to evisionals topic - Ofcoarse, in this situation you would need to try and clean it first to recover any costs.

I would suggest first checking if the underlay is also affected. If it is, just treating the carpet won't work anyway.

We had tenants move out and the stench in the house was HORRENDOUS. We tried all sorts of cleaning including special enzyme pet odour removal products.

In the end nothing worked, the smell was back within hours. So we ripped up the carpet and the underlay was soaked with urine. Seriously, I nearly vomit just thinking about it. It is beyond me how some people live.
