help me identify these spots...

Hello all,

these spots started happening on ceiling and have moved onto door mouldings - wat is this?

It's fungus.

http://houseinspectionhelp.com/5/ceiling_fungus.htm has a picture of the same stuff.

I'd bleach it with chlorine, rinse off and then spray with vinegar- this seems to work for most mouldy-type things.

You should try to rectify the cause though... is your house damp or otherwise unventilated?

That is a pretty rough surface in the first photo

In the second photo if those spots are on a steel door frame I would suggest rust. If moisture is getting into the concrete filling the steel frame and causing it to rust, moisture will come out under the paint and work its way through - may have been patched previously. I had this problem in a couple of frames - took me years to fix it, a few attempts. I had to stop the source of moisture (if current), open up the rust spots in the frame and let moisture dry out inside frame. On the final attempt I left the frame open for weeks, then patched with fiberglass resin before using filler - this sealed the frame and stopped any minor moisture remaining in the cement to leach out through the rust holes to the filler and paint..
