How much would you pay?

My friend takes advantage of people who are willing to pay :D - he breeds show dogs - and yes the pups are pre-sold prior to birth (the customers choose from the ultrasounds).

BUT - as with any biz, it's not as easy as it first looks! Especially when you have to take 3 weeks of leave from your work to nurse the pups 24/7 for 3 weeks until they go to their new homes.......... and yes, he reckons if you want to be a vet, specialise in show dogs - because people who spend thousands on buying the dog will spend 10's of thousands on vet bills.

Completely the opposite to people who spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on a car, and whinge and moan about an $800 service!

The deep down crux of what I think Bayview is getting at!

Very true - and I know of no show dog owner (or any dog owner?) that will "DIY" their veterinary tasks!!

....we never left him alone again.

Our dog goes to Pop's place and loves it so much there she is torn between staying and coming home.

He takes her to the beach every day, and fishing, and long walks, and out on the boat ... and she always comes home a few kilo's heavier

Has anybody walked through the show dog pavilion at the Ekka? There are some strange people who show dogs. I find it more interesting watching the owners than the dogs :D.

Both my cats are rescue cats, so they were really cheap. But on average each year I spend $200 on vet bills, plus food and litter. But all in all they definitely come in at under $1000/year and they're well worth that to me.

A friends dog got hit by a car when they were walking there loved pet. They ended up spending 14k in vet bills....yep $14,000. They ended up taking legal action against the driver of the car as they were nearly injured as well.

If you love your pets like ME:) then one may want to look at insurance cover and options available. Am not recommending any particular company.

One of my dogs recently had a bone lodged in the oesophagus, very nasty, as it was touch and go. Anyway she pulled through, cost $2500:eek:, fortunately we insuranced 2 weeks prior to accident, $150 excess. It costs us about $50 per month.

Cheers, MTR

We get our dogs from the RSPCA shelters, with the most recent one costing $300 a couple of weeks ago. That price includes desexing, immunisation, microchipping and a two week health guarantee. Yes they come with "issues", but nothing that giving them a bit of attention and discipline (that they should have been given in the first place) can't fix in fairly short order.

I'm in the boat of having spent a decent amount of money on my 2 purebred dogs. The daily joy and laughter I receive from my older one who is nearly 5 I would spend 10 times over what I paid for him for how he's enriched my life.

The 3 month old puppy on the other hand... she will eventually be a gorgeous adult but she's very much the challenging (and fun) puppy at the moment.

I also have pet insurance for both my dogs which totals $25 a month for the both so should there be any big (or small) vet fees it's covered.

In future if I do get any more dogs they will be rescue dogs, but for the time being I make regular donations to various pet associated charities.

I used to own a dog grooming business and one particular lady comes to mind who bred Bull Mastif dogs - $15k a puppy who she had an international waiting list 4 years long.

OK, I am going to fess up, I paid $1500 plus $400 in airfares to get my Westie about 5 years ago now. I also have a Silky terrier which was given to my daughter a present.

Knowing what I know now my next dog will be a rescue dog.

I fostered a pup recently from SAFE (Saving Animals from Euthanasia), he was a mixed breed lab? Absolutely adorable and would make someone a wonderful pet.

Also, be wary of dogs sold in pet stores, here is some food for thought......

My sister helped out the RSPCA by taking a dog from this raid. https://www.pet-abuse.com/cases/19366/QLD/AU/ She ended up caring for a 12 year old labradore for a few months that was still going on heat and had previously had several litters. It's a pretty sad life for them!

Re: Rescue Dogs.

We are on the lookout for a new Jack Russell and have been trawling the rescue dog places.

Got onto one the other day and the woman asked lots of questions, fair enough I spose, but then started the diatribe about how the dog is to have another dog friend, we answered yes we have a Border Collie (not yet born) on the way.
She said no way, too big and rough. I was gobsmacked at that.

Demands that the dog sleeps inside at night, is allowed all through the house all day and never ever to be left alone.
Wife was speaking to her actually and got very upset as this woman had no idea how well we look after our pets and basically refused us any further ado.

Now we have had dogs all our lives and bred Border Collies for a time. We have a great setup here 6 acres with the house yard fully fenced in approx 1ac, plenty of shelter, one of us is around most of the time and yes when it's really hot or cold the dog can come inside and lay on it's bed but not to be running wild around the house. We go rabbiting, and take long walks and trips in the ute, all our dogs have loved the back of the ute and they have all been very well looked after and loved.

So what is wrong with us...?

Seems this person does not want the dog(s) to leave her so called care.

All I want to do is call her back and ask when was it that dogs started to build houses...? Absolute nutter............:(
