I got my dog (miniature poodle) from a great website www.petrescue.com.au. which rehomes unwanted pets. He cost a couple of hundred bucks including desexing & microchip.
But the inital purchase cost is just the tip of the iceberg. Then there are the ongoing upkeep costs for things like food, training, grooming, annual vet bills, flea/worm treatment, petcare equipment, council rego, pet insurance and holiday petcare. That's assuming the dog doesnt get seriously ill or have an accident that requires major veterinary care.
Over a lifetime, the total cost of owning a pet would be many thousands of dollars. Personally, I think its worth every cent. But I suspect that many people underestimate the expense and can't really afford it. Which is why petrescue always has hundreds of pets needing to be rehomed.
