How does that result differ from what you were getting before all these issues?

Do you know how to log into your router?

My $2 is on the modem being connected to a UPS.
We had one like that, connected it to wall power instead of UPS and it was fine after that.

This is a good point. I had a couple of external hard drives that used to cause the modem to drop out all the time. The power supplies were "noisy" and interfered with the modem's power supply. It is worth unplugging as much as you can and/or trying power points on a different circuit. Ultimately your distance from the exchange is the limiting factor here.

I don't know if TPG have ADSL profiles like Internode does but that's probably more complexity than it's worth. If you want to get into the technical nitty-gritty then whingepool is the place to go for that.

Figure out how much data you use and try the broadband choice page I posted earlier. If you're stuck with TPG ADSL then you're probably not going to get much more speed than what you already have. 4G may be an option of you don't use much data. Or not.

ADSL speed graph

Here is a graph of theoretical maximum ADSL speed versus distance from the exchange. Note: theoretical, based on perfect copper (good luck with that); maximum, based on perfect equipment and a perfect installation all the way down the path, through the nodes and into the modem.

The real world is anything but perfect, even in theory.

As an aside, cable and fibre are not affected by distance.

Hi LoneWolf

I'm with TPG as well. Playing with SNR values helped to increase speed. I had SNR value as -1 (default) with 10MBps. Set the SNR to 50 increased it to 14MBps. Also, my wifi is slow. Changing the default channel from 1 to 11 helped a bit. Also, I've enabled WMM (Wifi Multi Media). Still messing around with the settings. I've got a Billion 7800n. Current speed is ok for what I use at home. I'm not into networking so still figuring this stuff out. As someone said, whirlpool has lot of information.

Thanks, I will have a go tonight at playing with SNR value.
Will hop onto whirlpool to learn how to do this

The TPG guy is at my place now, looking for a solution, which I doubt he will have anything

Does anyone here use Telstra broadband?
Any feedback on its speed?
Apparently since Telstra owns all the towers

Does this mean that If i switch to telstra, seed will be improved?

It depends cause it varys in each area you know. Telstra maybe good in location x but shi# in location y. What is the ADSL 2 modem you got? Any way to try another one. My mate next to me said he switched modems and it changed by 1 - 2 mbps.

As part of IT root cause analyssis, you must rule out all possible causes. Try another modem first.

Hi Will,

I currently have TD-W8950ND

What other modern can you suggest?

Broadband runs thru the copper network (owned by Telstra).

Mobile broadband utilises towers. Telstra does not own all the towers - Optus, Vodafone, Crown Castle and several other players own towers as well.

I purchased 7800nxl, but it did very little in improving the speed

TPG technician came out and said something not right at the local exchange, but who knows
They are booked to address this issue on next Monday, fingers crossed

Just to give you guys an update, and perhaps this may also help you in some way

A telstra technician came out, he identified that my phone line in kitchen is not the only line in the house.
He then disconnected the other line in the house, and now my speed have increased by more than 1.5 times, up to a speed of 8-9mbps

Considering I am 2.85kms away from the exchange, by getting 8-9bmbps for ADSL2+, I am pretty pleased about that, compared to <3mbps of what I use to get

I was going to suggest you get Telstra out to test the speed. We moved house and kept our Telstra plan. Turns out we live too far from the exchange and were told to expect very poor speeds. Telstra's 'acceptable' speed is much lower than the minimum speed required for streaming so we had to pay the full contract out and go with Optus who have cable in our street.

Glad to hear it worked out well for you.

Cable was the only other option, if ADSL2+ was not going to work for us.
The only down fall is "price", was not really prepared to pay an extra 30-40 dollars per month for faster internet speed.
8-9mbps/ works just fine for us, unless you are a serious downloader/gamer that need 100mbps/sec

This is via Wireless from my laptop to an earlier model Billion 7800 than you posted via ADSL2 on TPG 1.4km from the exchange. I have found better speed on the Billion than on Netgear previously FWIW. Is connecting with 14 Mbit Download speed. Used to get 6 -8 Mbit connect speed with Netgear.

Not sure if anything changed at the exchange in between.
