Liberals - policies may cause a recession??

Certainly wasn't like that in the stone age....?
Sorry Dan,,I missed your quote,,you walk into any casino anywhere in the world you know the rules does not matter outside whats happening outside the building the rules on sterilized gambling inside means "sf"

I was actually more interested that "'Gigabit Nation' service does not have a single end-user customer". So much for "if you build it, they will come".

Retailers aren't currently offering that speed to their customers.

A gigabit per second plan costs $150 per month wholesale from NBNCo, compared to $38 per month for 100 Mbps plans.

But ISPs must additionally purchase connectivity to serve NBN customers with data in each area. At a current rate of $20 per megabit, providers would need to purchase $20,000 worth of connectivity per month for each user, if that customer used the full gigabit per second speeds 24 hours a day.

It is expected the plans will become more viable economically as more customers use the network but, at the current stage, the number of customers are too small to justify the costs involved.

Let's look at the numbers.

Perthguy, I understand where you're coming from, and I sort of agree. The bill is less likely to pass now than in 2012, because there are more Lib/Nat members, and they have to vote no.

A majority of Labor MP's voted for the bill in 2012, although not all, as is their right with a conscience vote. To blame them for the vote failing is a bit rich.

Even if all Labor MP's voted yes in the lower house, it would have lost 74-75 (remembering that one Labor MP was speaker, and doesn't get a vote.)

EDIT: Unless it was during Slippery's 5 minutes as speaker.

In the lower house, yes. My mistake. In the upper house, not rich at all. Labor could have pushed the bill through in the upper house because they had the Greens and one Independent support the bill.

It just seems disingenuous for a party that did not strongly support a bill, less than two years ago, to seek to introduce a bill that is substantially the same. Why? Are they seeking to embarrass the Government? If so, they are the ones that should be embarrassed. To me, this issue is too important to be used as fodder for a defeated party to score cheap political points. It was suggested that there may be more going on behind the scenes. I really hope I am wrong on this and it is genuine and not a political stunt. Sometimes I am happy to be proven wrong.

Unless the increase in extravagant weddings provided a much needed kick start to many areas of the economy.
In terms of the economy, I see it as a bit of a deal. Think: venues, wedding planners, caterers, florists, clothing shops... the list goes on. It is estimated Australia's wedding industry will be worth $4.7bn by 2016-17. I know this is chump change compared to mining or tourism but some small businesses would benefit from an increase in economic activity in this industry.

So, after 211 posts, was Sash's original question answered or not ??
Yes it was. The question was "will Liberal's policies may cause a recession??" which was framed in the short term. The answer is "no". They are working with a hostile senate and haven't even prepared their first budget. Any recession we have now will be as a result of the previous government's policies.

Well...we maybe getting closer.....5000 Qantas jobs...potentially another 8000 in Qld.....confidence...well that maybe down to once people read about more job loses.

Unfortunately.....this liberal government is adding fuel to the fire by cutting spending drastically in the wrong areas at the same time. Will be very interesting over the next few months.

How do you know when they haven't even prepared a budget yet?

*** but yeah, they are going to cut spending.

Well...indirectly they have...quietly have not replaced staff in govt departments...contractors are gone. No new spending...those are cuts already. Department heads are not silly they have been given directives by the new ministers.

This is silly....because private sector is doing the same thing due to uncertainty...the more this prevails...the less money is in the system. The leading indicators were spending..both by consumers and business...the lagging indictor is employment...I can see a 7 in front for states like VIC and SA.

The real surprise will be NSW and Qld which will do okay.
