Missing Malaysia airline.

That theory is buoyed by word from a senior U.S. official familiar with the investigation that the Malaysia Airlines plane made several significant altitude changes and altered its course more than once after losing contact with flight towers.

Malaysian military radar showed the plane climbing to 45,000 feet soon after disappearing from civilian radar screens and then dropping to 23,000 feet before climbing again, the official said.

Investigators are trying to determine whether the satellite communications system that pinged for hours stopped functioning because "something catastrophic happened or someone switched off" the system, the newspaper reported, citing an unnamed person familiar with the jet's last known position.

The pings stopped at a point over the Indian Ocean, while the jetliner was flying at a normal cruising altitude, according to the newspaper.

An emergency beacon that would have sent data upon impact apparently did not go off, the official said. The beacons, known as Emergency Locator Transmitters, activate automatically upon immersion in fresh or salt water, but must remain on the surface for a distress signal to transmit.

The failure of the beacon to activate could mean that the plane didn't crash, that the transmitter malfunctioned, or that it's underwater somewhere.

Truth can be stranger than fiction, but the conspiracy theorists are out there

It's taken the front pages away from Russia/Ukraine events

20 passengers on board were Freescale employees. Freescale specializes in "radar-cloaking" technology and is a Pentagon contractor.

Another theory is that they do know where it is, but won't say anything at this point in time

was wondering how islam had managed to get such a grip in malaysia, quite interesting read here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islam_in_Malaysia

this was really interesting too:

As defined by the constitution of Malaysia, Malays must be Muslim, regardless of their ethnic heritage; otherwise, legally, they are not Malay. Consequently, apostate Malays would have to forfeit all their constitutional privileges, including their Bumiputra status, which entitles them to affirmative action policies in university admissions, discounts on purchases of vehicles or real estate, etc.

In other news, US troops unloaded over a hundred bullets into Osama Bin Laden's dead body.

A new report at SOFREP, a website for U.S. special operations forces, claims to shed light on the issue of why photos of slain al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden's body were never released to the public. According to unnamed sources within the special ops community, the images would have been excessively gory, because contrary to reports from officials and those involved in the operation, U.S. troops fired countless rounds into bin Laden's body after killing him.

I always fly Qantas ... remember that sentence Dustin Hoffman said in Rainman ????

The service is good ... in fact in comparison to BA its amazing ... I have to fly BA from London to Dallas a few times a year ... there is NO service on BA. The condition of the planes is appalling.

So when I get on the Qantas flight out of Dallas home, it looks really good and to hear that familiar accent is very reassuring :) Plus that flight from Dallas to Brisbane is rarely full, so it makes the trip that much easier.

Nothing but previously when flying, I always thought of safety in terms of the plane itself (i.e. that it's well maintained, etc) but with some of the stories coming out now, it seems that you need to have a level of trust with the crew as well which gives it a weirder dynamic. Probably a bit irrational but just some initial thoughts.

We're going in business class though, which is exciting :p
