Yes, but only after you've checked the nature strip first ;)
that made me laugh :D i've got a few lovely pieces of furniture salvaged off the nature strip and give a quick makeover by moi ... also picked up some great toys for the 2yr old that only need a good scrub before being handed over ... not stingy, just smart. apparently it's the best way for a uni student to furnish their first flat too.

Especially when many cast-off items are from other students (not uncommon in areas with lots of flats and concentrations of short-term uni students).

The furniture 'food chain' goes something like this:

Rich parent > shop > student > nature strip > scavenger

Sometimes if it sags too much, then it returns to the nature strip (often in front of another house) until another scavenger picks it up and so it goes...

At one time most nature strip TVs worked, but lately this figure has fallen to less than 25%. This could be a leading indicator that (either) we might be in for tough economic times, or rather than chuck out the unused telly, people now want to have three, four or five in the house. Portable TVs seem more likely not to be working than larger sets. It is too early to report on plasmas.

Even if the set is not needed, the state of kerbside TVs is good due diligence on suburbs. If there's a rock through the screen, it's a rough area. If the CRT is intact then it's a 'good suburb'.
