RIP Gough Whitlam

The man who (imo) was the catalyst for modern Australia.

Only just looked at the news this Man changed Australia in many ways some for the better some the jury are still out on.."RIP"..

He did so much for Australia--health care and education for all; equal pay for women; arts funding; withdrawing troops from Vietnam. A visionary with a big heart and a great mind.

He was also credited for opening the debate for land rights.

Listening to ABC this morning, perhaps trivia but I find these things interesting.

He never spoke to John Kerr after the sacking, however surprising that Fraser became one of his good friends, they had a great deal in common.

MTR:)

But apart from universal healthcare, no-fault divorce, indigenous land rights, free tertiary education, establishing diplomatic relations with China, introducing the Order of Australia, establishing legal aid, outlawing racial discrimination, abolishing the death penalty, changing the national anthem, abolishing conscription, standardising the railway gauges, extending sewerage in western Sydney, and granting PNG independence, what did Gough Whitlam ever achieve for Australia in his whole three years in office?

What have the Romans ever done for us?

Did he pull Australia out of Vietnam?

A Gold Card for life at the tax payers expense being just one.

Our boss's name was John Kerr. When Whitlam would ring and our boss's name was mentioned, he once said: 'I thought I got rid of that b*****d.'

And he actually did make sure that western Sydney got sewage facilities. He had lived in western Sydney.

Western sydney and large tracts of Melbourne were connected to sewerage in the 70's. Imagine, using a thunder box in Australia's largest city....

He introdudced the order of Australia, which took the place of dames and knights.

Funny how things change and stay the same....

Australia had already pulled out of vietnam by the time he was elected however.

By March 1972 most of Australia's force was back. Then in December when Whitlam (Labour government) was elected he withdrew the last 150 (approx.) troops.
