Seen any good movies recently?

As I get older, I am visiting the cinema less and less. And preferring dvd's at home. Maybe I just can't stand ppl kicking the back of my seat, crunching on popcorn within earshot, and gaffawing loudly...

Anyways, that brings me back to the dvd shop. I seem to go down 3 to 4 times a year and have a good look around, and take out all the dvds I think I might enjoy.

Recently, these movies seriously entertained me.

The Wrong Man
The Departed
The Holiday
Tastoi

So what has everyone else seen recently that they can recommend?

My better half loves the pics. I can't stand it. It's not others at the cinema, I just find reality far more interesting.

However, that's not to say that I never watch movies - just that at my time in life (3 young kids) I find attempting to sit through 2 hours of Spiderman just a bit excrutiating...

Quite liked Nemo though! You can see why I find reality more interesting...

Can't help it WW, I absolutely loved the ABC's "B*stard Boys", but even better was John Howards' response... It's now out on DVD, great viewing....:D

Love the West Wing however I note it not readilly avaible and not a movie.

Try

Downfall ( last days of Adolf Hitcher as recorded by his secretary)
Brokeback Mountain (disclaimer: graphic gay sex and is very sad)

Peter

Peter 14.7, I love the West Wing too, but a question I have to ask is; do you understand any more than about 65% of what they're saying? I find it sooo hard to decipher sometimes...

Sorry WW, I don't mean to hijack your thread.

yeah have been curious about brokeback or whatever mountain....haven't mustered the courage to get it out. the better half wouldn't understand why I wanted to see a movie about gay cowboys.....

I saw Blood Diamond a few months ago.

Almost fainted during the first few moments of the film and I usually avoid hand chopping films altogether:eek: but it turned out to be one of the most thought provoking, nail biting, exciting film I have seen for quite a while.

Based on true events that are still happening today, has certainly made me look at all diamonds in a different light.

Recommendation...10/10

Warning...very graphic scences that may be disturbing for young/female viewers like myself.

Mrs Bird...Just my opinion, no one else may agree.

'Sunshine' (88% on the tomato metre)

I'm a sucker for Sci-fi flicks, so... this one was very good for me, even the ending was ok even though it was the weakest part of the movie. It does enough to satisfy the thinkers and action fans.

A top popcorn flick.

"I talked to God for seven years. He told me to bring us all to heaven"..... I like that quote.

And paying $10 for two tickets, large popcorns and coke's is ok as well.

"Only dream I ever have... is the surface of the sun... every time I shut my eyes... It's always the same"

Loved Casablanca, ET was OK. M.A.S.H the movie, was great and if I must add an Oz movie, The Odd Angry Shot.

MOVIES ARE LIKE ROCK. (Those caps were a slip, but I'll leave them) New kids on the block seem to have conceded that they can't match the greats who are already in the can so they don't try. Sad.:(

Re-reading that it's tough on the movie industry buy definately not on the music industry. Dire Straits for God's sake, is the last super-group.

Hi WW.

Also like The Departed.

My wife wanted to see Casino Royale (when it was showing at cinemas) so begrudgingly went along to see it and ended up liking it. If you can forget it is a James Bond film (sorry JB fans), it is quite good.

Also want to see Die Hard 4 when it starts.

Regards
Marty

Thanks KF, should have added Casino Royale to my list above. Saw it in the previous round of dvd's and liked it a lot.

Thx for the recommendations all. Keep them coming.

I'm a fan of old old movies...especially B/W ones. However, my fav movie of all time is "Auntie Mame" with Rosalind Russell...she has such a great attitude:
"Life is a banquet, and most son's of bitches are starving to death".

How good is that! Certainly makes me stop and think about how good my life really is. Bring on the banquet...let me at it!:D

Fortunately for me, you can buy old movies on DVD really cheaply these days at Overflow and the like. I always have a few old movie DVD's stashed away for a rainy day or when there's nothing on the telly. I like to chill out with an old movie...pause to get refreshments...refill my glass of wine perhaps, put another load in the washing machine, etc, and watch at my leisure.

65% is about right. Wife and I are thinking of buying the DVD set to get the remaining 35%. You cannot watch WW tired. It takes concentration.

Yes, it does take concentration. But it's well worth it.

Which DVD set?

The ABC has series 1-5 for $37.95 (one of the cheapest prices around), series 6 for $69.95 (but there are cheaper). Season 7 was the final- they don't seem to be on sale in many places yet.

JB Hi fi has them listed cheaper- but they're not in stock :D

OK, BBM is a tragic love story. If you can get over the gay part then that is what you are watching. It is very good, sweeping epic. Ironically if it was straight, it would have been a good movie no-one went to see.

The gay aspect is the tragedy so is integral to the plot. The graphic sex (you don’t see genitals) is only once, assuming you are not offended by men kissing. There are some violent scenes as well. To me the violence was more disturbing because it is reality for gay men but again that is integral to the story.

It is worth seeing if only to understand what an estimated 10% of the population go through everyday.

And whilst talking violent Mel Gibson’s “Apocalypto” is IMO not that disturbing due to the historical nature providing detachment for the viewer. It is a little simple in parts but still a statement of climate change and family values. When you consider the entire move is in subtitles, it is amazing achievement that is was a commercial success as well. Worth a watch.

Probably all to watch from the start as we missed a number of episodes.

If you like Chinese period dramas, usually featuring some sort of choreographed kung-fu fighting, a couple I saw recently were The Curse Of The Golden Flower and The Banquet. From memory, the'yre both in Chinese with English subtitles.

The Curse of the Golden Flower has a fairly simple plot, but wonderful sets and costumes, and is grand in scale. While it has a bit of kung-fu fighting, it's not heavy on it.

The plot of The Banquet is perhaps a little more involved, but again has great sets and costumes and features more choreographed fighting and wire-work than Golden Flower.

Both links above have trailers, and it helps if you're not queasy about the ol' tomato sauce flying everywhere. :D

Cheers,
GP

I love Sci-fi too. The more realistic, the better. For me, 2001 is the perfect movie, whereas star wars, especially the last 3 are pretty crappy. One of the best movies I've ever seen was 'Aliens'.

I've been trying to see 'Sunshine'. It's an hour drive, 100 ks for me to get to the flicks. Dunno if it was ever on at Tamworth, but if it was I missed it. Went to Coffs Harbour a few weeks ago, and it wasn't even on there. I'll just have to wait now for the DVD.

See ya's.

ps. Your not really in Lithuania are ya?

Ok here's a list of older movies I loved...in no particular order.

Deliverance (scared the s*it out of my sorry a*s)
Crystal Voyager (and any surf movie by George Greenaugh...a groundbreaking genius cinematographer)
Apocalypse Now
Chariots of Fire
Cocoon (in love with the lead lady)

Gallipoli
Picnic at Hanging Rock
Mad Max (all of them)
The Castle (what a classic)
Gladiator

Deuce Bigalow (original plot and funny)

Ghostbusters
Star Wars
Name of the Rose
Blade Runner
Alien (the one with Signourney Weaver- had a crush on her for years)
Predator (was done well)
The Fifth Element (stylish)
Starship Troopers (seemed to go under the radar so enjoyed it more)
Four Weddings and a Funeral
The Blues Brothers
Flying High

Anything with Sean Connery or Gerard Depardieu

On the plane coming home saw 3 movies that grabbed my attention, so they must have been OK, as I usually can't follow a plot on a plane, too much else happening!

The Holiday - really enjoyed it but probably classed as a Chick Flick!!!!

The Dead Girl - pushed as a Toni Collette film but she was only one character in a film full of characters
and
The Painted Lady, I am usually not into historical movies but this one got me in
