Somersoft Hacked?

Yup, it's called a JavaScript redirect - tells the browser to do something automatically.
A lot of that going around, whether its paid-to-hack or a worm or what its hard to tell. But a few weeks ago on irc there was easily half a dozen people within a couple of days who had javascript redirect hacks, usually from having an iframe inserted somewhere. Some changed all links on the site to point to porn/spam sites, some were a bit messy and only caught the admin user, who got porn instead of the admin pages.

A lot of that going around

From what the hacker told me, I suspect there's a new vulnerability that has been found somewhere (he insisted it was an OS-level hack, not a forum or website hack - but either way, the result is still the same). He said he only learned it last week and was now being paid to hack sites for spam.

I bet there's a heap of other people who learned the same hack and so there will be quite a bit of it going around. That being said, the hacker said he had done several hundred sites already.

Either way, the end goal seems to be to insert a heap of links into content (or replace existing links, insert JavaScript redirects etc) in the database which then gets displayed to the users. The presumed benefit is a combination of SEO plus click traffic to the specified website.

The other side of the coin is that a website owner may just responding to an advert that says "Increase you google rankings, let us do SEO for you", and is then spammed across the globe.

Thank you much appreciated Sim for your work.appreciated ..it was hard being in Dubai and not reading looking at this great forum!

Quick question I was on the interview link that Y-man moved and i wanted to say thanks to redwig via a quick reply but it came up saying i don't have privileges to do this !or to contact the administrator..is that thread locked or something?

Do you use gmail, google calendar or any other google services with an account? I don't know the email you got, but they have actually made some significant changes to poilcy which they are doing all they can to let their customers know about.
I'm getting messages from Goole Map now, so guessing it is all spam!
