Time Outs

Not sure if this is the correct term for it, but Sim can you shed some light on the problem I'm having below?

I browse with Firefox, both before and after my recent ISP change. Was with 3 mobile broadband, now with Optus mobile broadband.

Occasionally, perhaps once or twice a day, a link I click on in a website will time out straight away without trying to load. No biggie. However with Somersoft - it happens ALL the time, almost every second/third action I click on times out without trying to think at all (as if the internet connection was down, but it's not). It happens when I click a post, when I hit 'reply' to a post, or 'submit' when I've typed my reply, when I try to subscribe to a thread etc. Pretty much everything in Somersoft 1 in 3 times the click won't work.

Would this be a problem with my ISP and Somersoft server or is that just a coincidence? I'm assuming it's not Firefox as I don't have the problem with other sites (well very rarely anyway)?

Any ideas and possibly a solution?

Very strange - not sure what it could be.

Perhaps a cache issue in Firefox? Try deleting it and see if that helps.

Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage > Clear Now

Another thing to consider - do you use a proxy server at all? If so, that could be causing problems.

Does it happen when you're actively clicking on a number of links in succession (ie clicking through a series of threads without pausing to read any of them)? Or is there always a pause first before you click?

An instant failure like that usually indicates to me that the network is not connected (not a bad link somewhere - actually completely disconnected). You sure your link isn't timing out?

Thanks Sim, I'll try those suggestions.

It generally happens when I've been on the page for a little while first, then click the link ie. not straight away click, click, click. So especially when I've typed a response and click 'submit reply' - happens almost every time then. Luckily my typing remains when I click the back button and I can just submit the post again.

I know it's just my problem, as SS works fine when I'm using my iPad - was just hoping there was a quick solution for my computer to stop the annoyance. Now that you mention it, it does seem to sound like a cache sort of issue, so will give that a try.

PS Of course now that I'm talking about the issue it doesn't seem to be happening! Always the way with me and computers.....oh and cars! :D

Try and lay off the porn sites for a day or two Stevo.

All those bugs you are importing can apparently mess with your system.

This happens to me as well (though not as often). I think it might be an issue with the software providers, because another forum I read uses VBulletin as well and the same thing happens there sometimes.

Steve, I have been having similar issues. Curiously if I hold the mouse down longer on the link/button it seems to have a much higher chance of loading.

Strange isn't it? Perhaps it's an SA thing! :p Will try the mouse hold thing, it's still only SS site that seems to be doing it now.

I would reset your firefox back to default. Also what version are you running.

Try internet explorer or chrome and see if it still happens.

Im Using 4.0 and it works fine.

My Firefox is set to default, though it's version 5. Will persevere as it seems to be happening less last couple days and I REALLY don't want to have to start using IE again. Getting away from IE was the reason I installed Firefox.
