What is your work/career/job ?

Stepped back in about 2 months ago managing two of the largest private sector websites in the ACT. (I was driving Jas mad being at home & the kids aren't old enough for us to go do a lot of the stuff we want to do)

Yup, so no longer semi-retired, but still doing the same things I was doing during that time, writing, renovating, running businesses (now all occurring after hours & on weekends).

It's a nice break working for someone else - though I'm still getting used to not getting my own way all the time :D

(But frankly I don't know how people can live this way for more than a couple of years - the reality of not having total control over my time or goals is very strange...I haven't really been in that position for more than 10 years)

Cheers,

Not to mention the benefit of regular income from your job which is important in this time of low growth,(and low interest rates for those investing in cash)

Urban Planner. I work for the NSW Dept of Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources 4 days a week and the ACT PLanning and Land Authority 1 day a week. I also consult to local government in the region.

I'm also a architect and admitted to practice as a solicitor but neither are as interesting as planning, I have to say.

I'm looking to scale back next year as hubby and I are looking to buy a franchise and we are looking at passive income so that we can do more of what WE want to do.

Occupational Therapist - have a private practice. We also have a company which has several other "branches". One being website development/software consultant. Another just starting is working with a builder to sell negatively geared investment properties.
I am one exam off having my certificate of registration for selling real estate. So, I like to have many things going at once. Also have 2 young kids, and a grown up step daughter.

Everybody's Mother

Well, if the question is:

What is your prime source of income, then I 'am' a property investor.

I 'am' also a 'Married Woman' who is married to a bread winner.

(When I started in Real Estate waaaay back in 1975 we had to ask people's occupations for the Contract of Sale, and women who did not have jobs outside the home were classified as 'Married Woman', equally retired men were 'Gentleman'; bit like Pride and Prejudice, wasn't it!)

Now, my own trade or occupation is Mortgage Broker. This is probably the 'best' occupation I have had, as it is the umbrella over all the other property occupations I have had - Licensed Estate Agent, property developer, active property investor, etc All of this revolves around money, and encouraging other people to do the best they can for themselves expresses myself perfectly.

Believe me, I have talked people out of purchases and out of deals when I can see that it is not in their best interests to proceed, but also I have urged and encouraged when the deal is clearly a good one but the prospective purchaser lacks the courage to proceed.

Occupation? Everybody's Mother!

I am a painting contractor in Brisbane with 5 employees. I have been running my business for 22 years now and love it. I don't always work on the tools anymore but I love talking to customers about colours etc. Only yesterday I have decided to do an interior decorators course for a challenge.

We have a collection of properties, many earn an income but some are still being renovated. One just sits there looking gorgeous after being fully restored to its 1879 new condition.I enjoy working on period homes and restoring heritage style properties. So while my age suggests that I should be retired I work very hard at what I enjoy doing.

When people ask what I do It doesn't seem right to say that I am retired but I like Kristine's idea of "Gentleman". I may use that on my next passport application.

Well, technically, I'm retired, cause I don't have to go to work anymore. I stay at home at look after my baby and dabble in shares and search for property deals. I do a little bit of colour consulting on the side when I feel like it.

I must say though, being "retired" certainly hasn't made me less busy. Sometimes I wish I still had a 9-5 job so I could get some rest!

Cheers,
Karen :)

Currently my wife and I run a company which provides scheduling services for the trucking community. We process about 20,000 transactions per week using the latest software and a team of 10 people.

On the side we invest in property, It is intended that the property portfolio will provide ongoing income when we finish with the business.

Cheers

After many years in IT, I decided that it was getting to a point where it was not something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. For a long time I did a lot of soul searching and even went to visit carrier councillors about where I should be heading.

Oppertunity knocked in the form of a retrechment package, which gave me the chance and time to really consider what I wanted to do. I even spent a bit of time looking for another IT position, but my heart wasn't really in it.

After much consideration, and a fair bit of research, I decided to become a mortgage broker, and I'm absolutly loving it. It combines the thinks I loved about my earlier carrier, with the things I felt I was missing out on.

I get to tackle work where people have a problem and I can help them find the best solution to get them to where they want to go financially. I also love the people aspect of the role, which was something I felt I missed in IT. The clients I see are trying to do something positive for themselves and it's great that I can be a part of that.

Steve,

Now you have given me "sore bones" pondering that question ;)

Btw - Qualified Electrical fitter, installer, armature, stator winder here.

What do u do.

I've done many things and lived in a few countries. I was a body double/actor (mostly double) in Toronto. Saved a few $$$ and went partners in a restaurant in Belize, Central America http://www.purplespacemonkey.com . We literally built the biz from the sand up. I still own but have become a silent partner (we are selling 'cause the CG has been so good - no tax over there! ). Got married to an Ausie backpacker in London (met her in C.A.) and we are now living in Broome, WA where we both work on a Diamond mine.

Best career choice yet! We work the same days for two weeks and then get a full week off to do whatever in Broome. It's like a holiday. The property is extremely expensive but we have bought and are now going to get into the IP thing (elsewhere as the prop here is too expensive, town not big enough and everyone is into buying and selling. Buy and own is where it's at).

Oh back on subject: I will be making short films on my weeks off - when we are not visiting places like Perth to buy some IPs.

First and foremost Im a skibum...

Im employed in an actuarial role.

I own a restaurant.

I step back into nightclub management when my arm gets twisted - not often!

In my spare time Im trying(still) to complete my two masters degrees - I dont think I can defer any longer...

As above - first and foremost Im a skibum - infact I was earning my turns last week - the two of us were the only ones out and plenty fresh snow on the ground - the highest peak(hill) in Australia - try putting a price on that...

G'day crew,

Gee, if I ever need IT advice, I know where to go!!

I work in the Sports Industry as a Sports Development Officer. No $$ to be found working in the sport industry but the lifestyle is pretty good and benefits aren't too bad. Work mainly on managing sporting competitions and events and all of the people involved in them. Get to see a lot of sport which is good, but bad sometimes as you are tied up in managing the event, it's over before you see any of it!!

Buying and holding IP's is a bit of a hobby at the moment and have age on my side so will think about the next step when I need to!!

Dos.
