Would you expect a Personal Trainer to look fit?

I've played sports with tubby guys who are really fit. I must admit though - I've never seen an obese personal trainer.

As TF said above - it's the condition of his clients that should be the real measure.

Cheers

Jamie

Hrm, this opens up possibilities as a career as a personal trainer. I could sit in a director's chair with a loudspeaker. I've watched the biggest loser, all they do is yell at their customers ;)

As long as I don't have to pick up any weights or anything, those things are damn heavy.

There are perceptional differences between a coach and a personal trainer.

In both cases they act in the role of facilitator, working with the athlete or client to acheive their goals.

On the face of it there is no reason to expect that a personal trainer should be any fitter than a coach to acheive the same outcomes however although there are plenty of well known out-of-shape coaches the generally image of the personal trainer as portrayed in the media is one of leading by example.

I must admit I would only go to an out-of-shape personal trainer if I had a mate who could vouch for the results.

I had a similar experience with a dietitian my GP recommended I talk to.

She was FAT. Like meat-curtain arms, fat! How could I take a thing she said seriously?

And all she did say was:
  • Go lo-fat cheese (I don't eat cheese)
  • Go lo-fat milk (so the 25-50ml or so I put in my coffee at 3% fat, will be better if I have the 2% fat one?)
  • Cut out snacks (I don't snack)

PS. skater - should'a been a poll! :)

That dietician sounds ridiculous.
Did you tell her to try taking her own advice?

Anyway, eating fat does not make you fat.
You can eat full fat everything, in moderation, and won't get fat if you consume less than your daily calorie expenditure.

Yeah, I know. ;) In the last month, I've started running. 3km, 3 to 4 times a week. With no change to the diet, I've dropped 3kgs already. Exercise, mate!!

(Not that weight loss is the primary goal, nor the main reason for the dietician visit... but that's another discussion.)

This is Mark Rippetoe. He's not morbidly obese, but he definitely has a bit of a gut. He's also considered one of the foremost authorities on powerlifting.

I'm not saying all PT's are in his world class, but are you sure you have judged the PT correctly?

Food for thought. :)

I think strength coaches, S&C coaches, sports specific coaches actually have a much higher experience and knowledge base than PT's.

These days PT's seem like salespeople.
Anybody can be a PT, you don't need any qualifications at all.
A 12 year old school obese girl could advertise herself as a PT and accept paying clients.

But getting back to skater's point, would she GET clients? Surely as a consumer looking for a PT, I'd use their level of fitness as a measure of fit-ness (pun intended).

Same way I'd recommend AGAINST the dietician I saw, simply because it didn't seem like she practiced what she preached.

Yes, but he is a powerlifting coach. I would definately listen to him if I was into powerlifting. He is not a personal trainer. BTW, he is also around half the size of the guy I saw.

I am a skating coach, I am carrying more weight than I should. I can teach people to skate, but I am certainly NOT a personal trainer.

Hard to tell...

Hmmm....

I've met plenty of mechanics who have the worst car known to man.

I'm related to electrician's whose home is the worst death trap, with bare electrical wires hanging out everywhere - despite young grandchildren running around and constant requests to get it fixed over the past 10 years without success.

I've met Property Managers who rent.

I know cleaners whose own residence is a pigsty.

I know HSE specialists, who due to their lack of co-ordination, are some of the most clumsy, awkward and most dangerous people to have on a worksite.

I know credit people making multi-million dollar decisions in Banks who haven't got two brass razzoos to rub together....we have a few here on this forum.

I know property "specialists" who start up very successful how-to firms and write multiple best selling books who own less than the average Somersoft member.

I know quite a few very fat Doctors who chain smoke.

Most qualified psychiatrists are fruit bats.

Never seen a painter's car with a nice paint job.

.....adding an overweight Personal Trainer to the list doesn't really raise an eyebrow.....

Surely logic would dictate the efficacy of a personal trainer would be better indicated by what their clients look like rather than what they look like?

I'm with you mate. Their customer's results are the end product. However, it would be easier to sell a shiny package.

Well I do expect my accountant to have investment properties and know all the ins and outs of deductions and structure.

I hear what you're saying but if my accountant wants to buy a flash car instead of investing, power to them. As long as they're up to date with tax legislation and I can understand their directions, they can do as they please with their own finances. My accountant doesn't have any IPs, but she knows her **** and is a tax mongrel. Just who I want in my corner.

What exactly should a personal trainer look like?

Fit?
Marathon runners and Tour de France bike riders would be the fittest around, but they have terrible weak frail looking bodies.

More muscle mass?
Atheletic looking?
A very high number of PT's are steroid users, which is very misleading to the unaware.

Then there are those who look strong, fit and healthy, but are not, it's just aesthetics.

Looks can be very deceiving......

I'd agree about most marathon runners but I'm quite partial to some elite bike riders. Some of them are slightly built, but others not so.

You are looking with "man eyes" :p:D

If a reality tv show was to be done, we know mexaclty what the personal trainers woudl look like

Who'd have thought that reality tv would be an an actually accurate of how the average property investor, smart enough not to get sucked in by such BS

:p

Isn't that what most want to become themselves anyway ?!?!!!!

Perhaps those trainers are leading by example
