"You are the average of your five closest friends"

I believe it doesn't matter how much money your friends have its about their attitude. I don't care if friends have money or not, if they are negative 'poor me' type people I can't hang around them long. Negative people bring you down so quickly.

I agree with this.
The attitude matters more to me than the bank balance :)

I think my mates always thought my property investing was a bit of a curiosity, but now ask me about how to do it themselves.

I have noticed that since getting the new house (which is a little larger than average) that suddenly some people (mostly my family) seem a bit uncomfortable around me. I figure it's their problem rather than mine, especially since I still get around in K-Mart chinos and humourous t-shirts.

I'm still the slightly rough but friendly kid from the poor suburb on the inside who tells silly jokes. My real friends haven't changed.

Elitist brand name snob - I wear the Savers trakkies, thanks. :D

HA, I use athl dept from k-mart.

Amusingly as I'm doing some messy renos atm, I wear cheap clothes and find I'm am treated like a second class citizen when I go to the shops for food now.

Went to the news agency the other day (clean dressed, just cheap clothes), the lady wouldn't even acknowledge me.

When I went over to Kalgoorlie to do my reno back in June, I was without a workable shower in the unit for the entire 2 weeks I was there.

It was also freezing at night, so wore work clothes to bed and I was on my own, so noone to have to be presentable for..

So, no shower and never changed clothes the entire 2 weeks there. :p

It was a bit weird going to the Bunnings and the super market looking like something from "Deliverance". I didn't care though.

But noone seemed to care...maybe there's something in that due to the place?

What are you doing a reno on ATM, by the way?

thanks for the replies and advice!

im starting out on this journey and want to make a real go of it.. so all advice is helpful atm especially when it comes from people who have gone down this path!!

i have been reading the books and speaking to a few BAs, im finally over my analysis peristalsis and ready to move forward.. the last two deals would have put me to the wall if i took them and from listening to my mates telling me i shouldn't take these risks did worry me ie the quote above.

So i thought id ask people already on there way or who have achieved their goals.

See Change, thanks for all your replies even on other threads, in realtion to Brett Stuart i did mention it, the conversation moved to souths straight away and how they keep loosing atm as a 'greg' is injured or something?! (I love the English Premier League and English football, not a NRL fan) so maybe they kinda pass your litmus test?!?! kind of....... Maybe?!
(I love the English Premier League and English football,

Me too WiganAFC.
There a couple of other football fans knocking around the forum also.
Most of my best mates live in England still and don't see them for years, but still consider them my best mates. Don't think any of them own much property, but always great to get on the drink and go to the match.
And if I ever loose the lot, they will always be there, usually in the same pub.

When I lived in Coota and all the other fancy rural towns, nobody cared what I wore either. The habit carried over when I came back to Sydney, took me 2 days to figure it was easier just to look dapper when I head out.

Doing a manufactured building now (finish in 2 weeks), and 2 approvals for a granny flat and a large deck for my parents, will fence the sites and break ground for prelim works in 6-8 weeks. Am working on a business now too. Working significantly longer hours with a lot more stress now that I am 'unemployed'.

Trying to find something easy going for personal expense cashflow so I don't mess up my investment capital.

I occasionally look at photos of my grandparents and Aunties etc - a bygone era of the 50's, and 60's....a time of class and style, or pride of appearance, manners, respect - across the board.

Back then, it was the norm to make an effort to look your best when going out in public.

Now...going to The Mall or indeed almost anywhere is to be "skanked out", or "boganed out".

People making a huge effort to look like a mess, or making no effort; take your pick.

It used to be that to be not well off was not an excuse to look like a bad road...people made an effort.

Places like Chapel st, or Rodeo drive, etc - places where the achievers hang out - a lot different. Not enough of these places anymore.

Hey somebody's got to be the best and worst of those 5! We can't all be average!
:D

hang on, did you not recently mention that you went 2 weeks without a shower and walked around bunnings etc looking like a hobo?

Yep.

I was wondering when someone would pick that up! ;):D

The difference is, mine was a once in a blue-moon event of "boganification"....not a lifestyle choice.

I also don't:- drink and drive, do drugs, welfare/Worksafe cheat, drive unregistered/unroadworthy/stolen cars, drive unlicensed, call cops c**ts and pigs, punt all the rent on nags, own unregistered/registered attack dogs to feel tough, cover the front yard with car wrecks, commit crime, dump rubbish, get into punch-ups at pubs, don't smoke, take sickies like they are going out fashion, and so on....the usual stuff.

Yea man, I used to have real shitbag friends and was going places (believe it or not..!) I still see them occasionally but don't enjoy it as much as I once did. I feel I've outgrown them in most aspects. Now, I only have a few friends. You only need one really good one if you ask me, and thats my Wife. I enjoy our life now more than ever before and have goals that are slowly forming into fruition while most others are stuck in the rat race

Yes one percenters should mix with one percenters.

Otherwise, there will be clashes, conflicts, resentment, jealousy and envy.

I like my friends for who they are, and what they contribute to the friendship, not for their net wealth or lack thereof. I have a few work colleagues and acquaintences who are successful investors and chat about investment stuff with them, but little else.
Any seriously successful investors would probably not want me as a friend as I would drag the bell-curve way down :)

As a general principle, birds of a feather flock together. It is unlikely to see a homeless man living under a bridge socialise regularly with a high court judge.
