Best way to gauge "average joe" economy?

A good gauge at any time is the jobs advertised section of the newspapers.

In the 1990s recession, one Saturday there was half a page. That's it, half a page (in the Courier Mail, Brisbane).

Never seen anything like that since.

So long as people keep their jobs then they will mostly ride out any recession. Unemployment is when things go badly wrong for most people.
