Brenda 's kitchen

I agree!

Our kitchen (looks similar in size) cost around $3000 including appliances. That was for vaccuum formed doors, granite benchtops & corner pantry.

Find out where the auctions are near to you & see what is available there. Even if you can't do the installation yourself, you should be able to find a carpenter that can screw them together for a small price. You will save $1000's.

don't even use a carpenter - get in a handyman at half the price, and will be finished in less than a day. go flat pack if you can so you're not trying to rearrange someone else's kitchen to fit yours. and as skater said - go to the auctions, scratch and dent sales etc for your appliances.

i know this will be your dream kitchen but why pay $5,000 more than you need to - wouldn't you rather spend that extra $5k on a trip to europe or african safari or lie on a beach in the tropics?

Good to see you've decided to treat yourself, Brenda. If we can't all do something for ourselves every now and then, what's the point of all this investing? I'd much rather reward myself along the way than hold out for a reward when I'm 60.
Get another quote - you'll get that price down by a couple of thousand - and go for it. Don't agonise over it. Get your lovely new kitchen in before spring and enjoy it.

i am not dreaming ,i quoted brenda a realistic price for the work involved ,a fully installed vaccum formed kitchen with square framed vj doors ,its great to go cheap if your onselling the property but brenda has to live in this house ,so doenst this lend itself to creature comforts

HIGH PRESSURE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
how do you see me as high pressure ,when all i have done is go to the house assess brendas needs and desires for her kitchen and then quote appropriately for the work ,i dont drive a bmw ,i dont wear suits ,i dont insist on going to the house only if both the decision makers are there ,i dont offer a discount if they sign up there and then ,what i do do is let people make their own mind up if they want to utilise my company for their project then great ,if they dont well and good ,i dont care !!!!!!!,go and find the cheap prices buy the chinese crap, let it fall apart around you ,but then when your kids cant find jobs because all the manufacturing jobs have been taken by overseas companies operating in third world countries and no one can afford the rent on your properties think back to this forum !!!!
kind regards
tom armstrong
(apparently the high pressure kitchen manufacturer)

hehe ... take it easy tom, he means you're using high pressure laminate ;)

From the info here and from brenda in the chat room its a fair and competitive price.

Not quite sure how anyone can comment on the price without seeing the drawings and spec......

one can only assume those that are commenting are doing so without any real knowledge ...

have a red ..

without any knowledge???

and chinese stuff aint all crap, and who said anything about china?

I get something made for me in china because in Aussie wages too high and too many complaints about quality.

could go on..

all the best

yeh .. the photos are a nice idea tom, plus some details on how the install went would be good.

agent 86 i forwarded brenda a link to some chinese sinks today ... she is going with something dearer as far as i know ......... and why not! ... its a ppor not an ip.

Arms, Firstly welcome to the forum! :D

Im assuming that you work for armstrong cabinets? Sorry, is this correct?

I just wanted to ask, as I am in the process of doing a kitchen renovation myself, if these older kitchens cabinets sit directly on top of the kickboards as a base frame or if the cabinets have their own legs?

Thanks champ,

RJ

you're confusing a kickboard with a plinth now rj......

older kitchens sit on a plinth.

A kickboard is just that .... a "kick" board

bah! kickboards, plinths, gables ..theyre all the same to me! :p

RJ

a plinth is just a four-sided, hollow square that sat under the carcase to lift it off the ground - nowadays replaced by 4 legs. the kickboard is the strip of wood (or whatever) that runs the whole length of the carcases to hide the plinth (or now legs) to make the kitchen finish look tidy ... have you been talking about plinths all the time? or did you really mean kickboards?

Brenda

Congratulations on getting a new kitchen.

I have just been through all this for IP in Cairns. Apart from the pot cupboards which someone has already mentioned, I put all the cupboards up on stainless steel legs. This means that the "kickboards" won't be neded, what is more, if the tenant floods the kitchen the water will not go into the cupboards. Also being a Victorian I am really hung up on queensland cockroaches and bugs getting into cupboards!! If they are off the floor then I hope they won't climb!!! :D

hi rj ,your close but i own armstrong cabinets ,,btw a plinth, kickboard is the box /ladder frame under the cabinets used to raise the cabinets off the floor so that a recess can be produced under the cabinets for your toes to go so that you can get up against the bench to work , also chrispy cockroaches can narrow their bodys down to 1mm thick and it is near impossible to make a cabinet roach proof without foam sealing all the joints ,modern chemicals have come a long way from the old days ,steel legs look great but i have found that people dont clean under the cabinets and spiders love the dark
kind regards

Inform Yourself

Hi all,

Yes I am another local designer doing the rounds - as one does; and a few of you here will know me from elsewhere.

If you are considering bringing a discount imported product into your life there are a few more things to think about besides how cheap it is.

I recently posted this on another board but thought it might have some value in this discussion.

"Shocking results of a study commissioned by the Australian Environmental Labelling Association Inc (AELA) show that almost half of imported wood panel products tested failed to meet Australian standards with formaldehyde levels of the worst products over twice maximum allowable levels. Formaldehyde has been classified as a Class 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). This chemical is also currently being reviewed by NICNAS, Australian Government body, for more stringent human exposure levels. These products cover a wide range of applications including flat pack kitchens sold by prominent Australian retailers including xxx. For example, a kitchen cabinet door from xxx recorded the highest reading at 2.24 times the Australian standard for formaldehyde emissions. Tests conducted on behalf of AELA at a specialist NATA accredited laboratory tested 16 imported products with 7 products failing outright"...(continued)

http://www.aela.org.au/aela/

Even if you are onselling your budget reno - if you install one of these things you will be exposing yourself to the carcinogens...not to mention the ongoing outgassings as the boards continue to dry...

Feel free to contact me for any further information about affordable custom kitchen options - whether they are mine or someone elses.

Much respect,

Earl
