Job Offer Too Good To Be True?

Dazz: Where are those jobs? Most of the ones I've seen advertised are paying half that, require 5 years experience and a police clearance. Obviously looking in the wrong places?

Sorry to go OT, but Dazz, the eldest (19yo) might be interested in roustabout/roughneck work.

Have you got any tips on how to get in? Have been told a lot of jobs are word of mouth and competition is fierce. Rig companies mentioned are Songa, Seadrill, Diamond, Maersk, Atwood, Oceanics, Ensco. But been told the less skilled jobs are filled via specialist recruiters like OMS Offshore.

Been told they need a few certificates like BOSIET, MSIC, working at heights, confined spaces, JSA....but am unsure what employers pay.

Have heard the starting wage for a roustabout is 50-70k but presume there's a lot of downtime with that.

Any info appreciated. Will PM Regrow....

One from left field.....have you ever thought about being a roughneck offshore working for a drilling company ??

If that's you in the photo, you look like a bunch of young blokes I used to work with.

Must be 18. No need to read or write, most cannot. Must be able to lift heavy things and be strong. You get paid "from the neck down".

2 weeks on, 2 weeks back home with your feet up.

When on, you work 12 hours per day...and you actually have to work, not sit on yer bum in front of a computer surfing the net, and you actually have to do what you are told and sometimes your supervisors won't have read the left wing books on feelings and empathy and compassion.

Everything provided for free when on the rig.

Pay about 120K p.a. Not bad for working only half the year.

Check with 'regrow' on this forum, he's out there living it right now. :)

Jenman tried to brainwash my SIL into accepting $70k less for her house. Their educating you program will consist of you trying to get all your friends and relatives to sell their house or buy another one, then when that is finished, they hire another new agent.

Interesting, if this is the case I wont be too impressed.

i thought the Jenman system was the holy grail and the most ethical training system available? read most of Neils books etc.

It is one of the ironies of life. When countries for example use the word 'democratic' in their name, the country is anything but democratic - usually the opposite. When the word 'ethical' is used ad nauseam as this mob do, in my opinion the same applies, but like a previous respondent said, you can learn from any situation, even what not to do. Valuable advice indeed!:D

There are easier ways to get a decent job.

I will spend a year or even take short courses if it means getting the job i want. Also on the job training helps.

Even if i didnt have the right piece of paper i have the drive and committment to learn on the job. And no employer regretted that.

I also cold call and approack employers i want to work for and can see long term career growth with such as large building companies, then ask for an informal interview.

Lots of them are "boys clubs" and i wanted to get into cadet project management on building sites. To do so i cold called, requested informal interviews and practically just hounded them. I ended up getting in sales administration with a company who will pay for me to do Cert 4 is Project Management.

Its about being pro active, confident and keen. Dont wait for the right job... Go and get it!!

Good call about those "democratic" countries!

the only person i have ever heard describe his system as "eithical and the holy grail" is him, especially in his books, have u ever heard an independant person say a good thing about it?

Most of my farm mates have gone to the mines.

they like country boys who have common sense. Grown up around machines etc

Most only needed tickets and experience. So truck, digger, excavator, front end loader etc.

My brother in law is on main roads and was just poached,,..literally.

Good luck

Thanks for the input everyone :D

Joycenmat, you make a great point. I have always believed in being pro active and have already visited over 10 local businesses id love to work for, in my best brand new suit and tie and they have all been blown away on my presentation and attitude, just no positions available.

I am still considering what I believe my "Dream Job" actually is. At the moment, with a 25% pay cut where I work, (for minimum 16 weeks with view to extend) I cant afford to not "settle" for a new job anywhere I can land one really.

I will be hitting the pavement on Monday morning to visit all the real estate agents in my local area (Wyndham, so theres heaps!!!) and will put on my best smile and see where that lands me.

My "Dream Job" would be making 100k+ PA working with cars or motorsport in general. Im still trying to work out if thats even possible without actually owning a business myself.

Anyone out there know of any sales/office related motorsport jobs going 30mins within Melbourne City?

Cheers

Mick

On a side note, I drove past the agent where I applied for tonight, compared to the multiple agents next to it, they have not one house for sale in the window, compared to the others who have their windows full of them.

I guess this creates imagination in the customer looking through the window and the illusion that they dont need to advertise etc

Interesting.

Cheers

Ah, the good old Jenman system - I know it VERY well.

Did the many interviews required, was passed by all, and then decided it was not for me.

Cold canvassing, quota's to obtain within the first few months, PRIOR to being paid the big bucks, with real estate experience being the last thing they're looking for.

I put them in line with some sort of cult - brainwashing and all...:(

Also, got my license as a regular Real Estate agent and knocked back sooooo many of those gigs too.

I just can't bring myself to do it, even though you can make big money.

I gotta sleep at night for there really are no boundaries one can cross it would seem.

job satisfaction and potential earnings.

Just a few things to say, if I may? I'm not trying to be rude by any stretch, so apologies in advance if I offend.

Potential earnings is the key here. Most REAs as a base wage are on roughly $40k (if that). I know the ones I used to work with earnt $616 a week - I was on $500 a week, on reception with no experience.

Many agents "fail" so to say within the first 6-12 months, especially with sales. It's easy to sell a house, homes will always sell - it's the listings you want. Many cannot survive on the low wage or the stress of paying a retainer back and long hours for little reward.

It's not easy sailing by any stretch.

Also, if you are the man in your avatar i'd like to point another thing out - not being rude.

It is unlikely you will be hired with facial hair.

Why? Because agents don't want their representatives to look "rough". No matter how well maintained the facial hair is. I've even heard of men having to remove studs in their ears because it wasn't "acceptable".

I think it's a bit too good to be true. It sounds as though it's a real estate ad - making a property seem fabulous, but in the fine print, or after inspection you realise the cracks in the walls, lack of personality in the home, you get the point.

I think they're trying to reel people in, and they will. However, I think you're perhaps best to steer clear. It's not a nice feeling to be constantly working, many people calling you well after hours and for what? To potentially make $77k per annum, if they're happy with you?

...whereas my suggestion encourages facial hair, earrings, noserings and even facial tattoos !!

Ain't too many jobs on this earth where you can be illiterate, cover your face with facial tattoos, swear like a f****** trooper at the boss and client and still get paid well over 100K pa for doing 6 months work.

Anyway, back to the RE salesman job.

lol Dazz

lil skater, give Mick some credit in regards to understanding customer facing roles and personal presentation, even in the real estate industry.

Hahahaha...

Thanks for the tips Lil Skater, and no, I dont think you came across rude etc.

I have been well aware of the facial hair thing way back when I had my last sales job. We were expected to be clean shaven every day or we were sent home haha..

I don't look like what I do in the avatar anymore since I have been fronting up to companies asking for a job, fresh shaven face, brand new suit and a suit case full of resumes is how I roll until I find a new job :D

My missus isnt too happy about me being clean shaven again as I now look like a high schooler hahaha. She prefers the rougher look... Ah well, she'll have to put up with a "yupee" looking business man once I find my new career hey hahaha

Cheers

Mick

UPDATE :

Still have not received my "Information Booklet" from the "Jenman approved" agent I applied with.

I am suiting up on Monday and visiting their office personally to pick up the booklet ad to suss them out. I will also be visiting every major estate agent office in the area with a fresh batch of resumes.

Wish me luck !!!

Cheers

When did I ever say anything on the contrary?

Apparently you seem to be the only one that doesn't think I was being rude...

Lol, that's what I do too, however it's more the shoes I wear than the facial hair!

I must agree with the school boy thing, I think I prefer mine to keep his facial hair too!

I don't think you were being rude, you were just trying to offer some advice. But to his credit, facial hair isn't like a tattoo. Just because he has it one day, doesn't mean he'll turn up to a job with it the next day. :)

SO, it's women like you and Mick's wife, that are the reason men don't shave. :) Haha I prefer the clean shaven look, but seem to be in the minority of women.
