Self made skylight

I've seen skylight kits. What I was wondering has anyone made there own "kit". What I am thinking is replacing a sheet of iron on the roof with clear sheeting (not sure what it is called) to put light into the roof cavity and then some kind of clear material in the ceiling where I want the light to come through.

Am I missing something here? Do proper kits direct light better to where you want them?

I've done exactly what you've described a few times. In all cases I replaced the manhole cover (which was near the vanity in the bathroom) with a cut piece of Perspex. The roof sheet was replaced with clear sheet of the same profile. Another one I did had clear polycarbonate tiles that replaced 4 concrete tiles of the same profile.

Yeah, it worked fine. I didn't use coke bottles filled with water though.
