Starting a Business. Things to do?

People telling you $50 a month is expensive would indicate to me they have only had experience with low traffic sites. Agreed 10,000 unique visitors is very tiny. 100,000 pagesviews per day is very small so would warrant a cheaper hosting solution.

Hi CoastyMike,

Are you hosting onshore or offshore? There's obviously a large difference in price and was wondering if a local data centre is worth the additional cost once you get into delivering web sites with serious amounts of traffic.

Just curious really. :)

In my opinion, business plans are bunk. No one sticks to them and no one can tell what the future holds. Success is more about the person than the plan.

They are useful for getting finance tho, thats about it.

Regrdaing setting up your business. Dont worry too much about all the set up stuff. Just go for it, get out there and start making money. Once you can prove its a good model and you can sign up customers then do all the necessary stuff.

A business is about making money, everything else is secondary. Ive known too many people who have all their ducks lined up (great bus plan, stationary, accounts, etc etc but arent making much money. But they can say they own a business. LOL

Its putting the cart before the horse imo.

i have to agree with this guy. This post is me :D BUt i did the plan etc. MOst will work out it needs to be financially viable. then i can hire an admin chic. ;)

In all my time in business, i remember one simple line:

"Businesses don't fail, people do"

Good luck with your venture. Looks like you have the right attitude to succeed.

Advertising companies that specialise in this generally charge a commission of between 20-30%. If just a website then yes easier to move across but if you have a database at the back end then this becomes more complex.
Ah, that explains the 30% I got told :) My devious plan is, in fact, an advertising company, since the ones I currently use SUCK for what I (and a decent number of others) want to use them for and there aren't any alternatives. Which gives away that this is a website (which I've made about half the functionality of) + database + some cron backends, and that 10,000 overall users is actually a decent number. It also means it will be self-advertising once it gets going, by definition. Hard part is getting initial users, although the number of complaints on forums about the lack of ad networks servicing the niche in question ... well, just need to reply to those complaints with a solution :D

And I say again, starting messing with a new business idea a few weeks before you have a baby due is a bad idea. Besides looking at website spark, I haven't touched this for two months now! Argh!

Main thing is have fun and as long as you enjoy it then all good. I'm amazed at all the naysayers who told me I was wasting my money and don't bother as it would go nowhere. The website is now allowing me to live in Bangkok for half of the year which is something I have been enjoying immensely.

Well considering how long I've been b*tching about the other ad networks it certainly fits the 'passionate' criteria :D

I registered the domain just over a year ago when I was particularly frustrated by Google. I managed to snag a short, snappy, descriptive and utterly PERFECT pre-loved .com, I must have got it right when it expired. Love it!
