Do it yourself unless you've got money to burn and you might just learn something.
Could I take a small sample of the floor timber and get the paint shop to prepare the stain for me? I could then ask our painter (or hubby) to do the stairs.
If you are going to diy, watch out for all the fine dust which will take days to settle.
That would be a job for a floor sander.
Generally stairs are quoted at around $100 per stair. The complication (particularly if they have been coated before) is to get matching colour in the sanded boards. This proves problematic in the risers and in the number of corners. ( A standard room might have around 6-8 corners, whereas a set of 14 stairs will have over 50 corners - more if the step protrudes over the riser).
I dont know know many sanders who enjoy doing stairs.
