Time spent on the internet vs Body Mass Index

My missus, the Doc, has a list of horror stories of overenthusiastic colonic providers perforating bowels etc. I cannot imagine this is something that I would want someone to mess with down the local shops. These aren't things that get better easily and cause quite some lifestyle changes - and not for the better.

Be careful.

As far as losing weight I really believe it boils down to intaking less energy that you are expending. Two variables here. Eat less/healthier or expend more energy. God forbid even both. Some people say it is impossible but I am sure we have all snuck a peak into a big persons shopping trolley and often the cause is obvious. But I do know that there is a minority with endocrinological issues that makes it hard.

I think some diets are great at making you feel good tho and the 9 months I was a vegetarian had me feeling the healthiest I ever did. I did it OS in a country where meat serves were much lower than here and we had a lady who lived with us and helped a lot with meal preperation. Back in Australia it is just too hard to socialise without eating meat and also to run two different menus with meat being off for me but on for the family. Although we have cut down to probably 4 serves a week.

That is my thoughts and please remember I am a simple fellow who likes things simple. For anyone like me I recommend reading Dr John Tickell's books. I saw Dr John speak in 1998 before he became a TV celeb and it really was as simple as eating 2/3 good food (and we all know this is vege's) and one third bad food. Perhaps it has been added to since but read the books. My good friend Ruby has also recommended him to me and she knows everything.

Cheers,

TFB and Simon,

I've done quite a lot of reading on colonics - especially reading stuff written by people who have been doing it for decades. It's definitely not a regular thing - reliable sources say the best results are achieved by doing a course of colonics in conjunction with a 7 day fast every six months.

I've geneally not paid a lot of attention to western medical practices over the years - to, in my opinion, my advantage. Although at the same time, I hadn't really paid much attention to eastern style medicine either. It still makes me laugh how Chinese medicine, developed thousands of years ago is referred to as 'alternative' medicine and Wesern medicine is considered tradiotnal.

Anyways, I know what I'm doing re: colonics and changing my diet. Taking a leaf out of the books written by Chinese medicinists thousands of years ago that are still just as relevant today is my preferred path. What I like most about it is that it strikes at the cause, rather than alleviating the symptoms and making lots of money for drug companies.

I am not anti colonic, and who knows it might be fun! Just advising caution. No doubt you will be well informed and particular with whom you choose.

TFB,
I am on the net about 1 - 3 hrs a day, adsl at home and also at work.

BMI =22 (TFB you mean BMI = weight (kg) / height TO THE POWER OF 2 Right ? )

Walk during work luch time may be 2 to 3 times a week of 30 mins each, some neck/back ex in the morning.
I mainly sit at work. Don't need to lose weight or reduce any "measures" however need to tone and get FIT very very badly otherwise I fear I would not be around long enough to enjoy my ...wealth.....
As you have also freely mentioned your age, I am 48.
Regards,

If I grow 19cm then I should be able to get my BMI down to 22 provided I maintain my weight:rolleyes:

Yeah yeah, I knew that Simon! It's all good. I'm looking to buy a colema board and do it myself at home. The Colema Board was designed by V.E. Irons asnd he had this to say about it:

My seven year old son frequently takes home colonics - all by himself. I'm 87 and I take them all the time. So if you're between the ages of 7 and 87, you should have no problems, it's completely safe.

If a seven year old kid can do his own, I can do 'em too I reckon! Plus I don't need to go to some clinic and pay $50 a pop.

I find the thought of a 7 year old being encouraged to do that alone is all a bit hard to stomach. Especially in the absence of evidence based diagnostics.

Not for me or mine I think. But fill your boots Mark

Hi Bruce, Just wondering, are you doing some kind of research here or is this just an interest thing?

I spend about 15 mins to an hour a day on non-work related stuff and that is mainly this forum and the propertyinvesting.com one. I don't ever watch TV or movies.

When I'm not working or here, I chase kids around and that's the only exercise I get. too lazy to work out my bmi now, but details are:

Height 5 foot 4 inches (what's that in m?)
weight 49kg.

If someone could be bothered working it out, please do so ;)

I know what you mean.

According to my height/weight charts, I should be 2.75m tall.

I'm working on the height :D

Not sure what my BMI is but I'm 5'1 and 112 lbs.I am 45 years old.

I don't work out but 8 hours a day at work I am constantly walking or squatting etc.(factory)

I spend 2-3 hours a day on the computer at home and when I am at this forum my hubby and I play Scrabble on the comp.

Ggum & GeoffW,
Go to China, apparently they can help to improve your BMI the way you want, big trend there I ve heard , but .....they will have to chop you in half first.....

TFB,

Interesting question!

OK, My BMI is 24.8. I am 168cm and 70kg. I'm working hard to INCREASE my BMI but I'm a slow gainer...

I work out at the gym for about an hour, three times a week. Mon/Wed/Fri lunch-times. I just do weights on a split routine alternating between back+bi's / chest+tri's with ab's thrown in every workout. I used to be around 25% bodyfat but have dropped that to around 10-12% now...

I use the internet about 3-8 hours a day for non-work related stuff. ;) Depending on whether the bosses are around to look over my shoulder in our open plan office. I have ADSL broadband at home too.

Cheers,
Michael.

Simon, it is an absolute that the only way to lose weight is via Calorie deficit. However, being comfortable with the deficit is very much dependent on avoiding hunger pangs and blood sugar fluctuations. IMHO, the unheralded benefit of exercise is in stabilizing blood sugar and suppressing appetite.

Xenia, no I am not conducting any research. Am just a curious fella, and often feel guilty for the amount of time I spend at a puter, and was wondering what the rest of the world is up to. There was a report on childhood obesity on Friday, and it always gets me stirred up. The Fed Govt are going to throw millions at a national ad campaign to advise people to get up and moving more. I think the money could be better spent.

Xenia,

Your BMI is 49 / 1.63^2 = 18.44

i.e. You'r really skinny. ;) :p

Bmi

http://www.mydr.com.au/tools/bodymass.asp

I used this calculator.

I figured at 170 cms and 70 - 72 kg
My BMI is 25.

Sheesh! It says I am nearing overweight. ? How can that be?

All my shirts are size small, and fit me OK.

I spend about 10 hours a day on the computer.
I also (except for Dec / Jan)
ride 2 + hours 2-3 times per week,
swim 1 hour once per week
run 1 hour once per week.

chase kids, renovate etc..

Salsa, just make sure the chopping is done the right way, otherwise your BMI is increased, not reduced!

A latitudinal chop across the waist will quadruple your BMI since height is halved ;)

Does the BMI measurement take into account that fat weighs less than muscle? Worked mine out - it is 22, but although I am quite thin I have more fat than muscle and am working on gaining more muscle mass/tone and losing the flab. Therefore I expect my weight to rise and my BMI to rise as well although I should be fitter/healthier and look better. So a higher BMI is not necessarily bad as long as the weight is muscle and not fat?

cheers:)

Hi I'd say the BMI as a 'health' measurement is flawed as it takes 'body weight' rather than lean mass as the variable.

If you've got a 100kg woman whose never set foot in a gym in her life and spends all day on a couch in front of the idiot box with a height of 175cm, feeding herself nothing but fatty nastiness, her BMI will be identical to a body builder of the same height and weight, who hits the gym for 10hrs/wk and eats nothing but salad and steamed chicken breast.

And if you were to look at the 2 side by side - would you use BMI as a measure for fitness / health?

btw my BMI is 27 - I'm 186cm and 96kg, and lift heavy 3hrs per week plus walk for a half hr on the non-lift days
