Definitely rude taking the bin from the property.
As others have said, in our court, we have an unspoken agreement that if your bin is out for collection it's fair game - we hear bins moving about late at night as various neighbours hunt around
However one day we went to put our green bin out and it was missing! We were trying to figure out when we last saw it - we were certain it was in the drive way inside a locked gate - totally puzzled as to who would steal a bin, we were standing outside talking to the neighbours across the road. They suggested calling the council etc - when my next door neighbour came out looking rather sheepish "Uh.... I thought you guys were on holidays...."
I was more interested in how he actually got to the bin - apparently he jumped the fence, grabbed the trolley bin (these are the big ones BTW!), and tossed it over the fence to his back yard!
