Craig Thompson found guilty

While I agree he did the wrong thing and probably deserves some form of punishment....WHO was the idiot(s) who just blindly paid the bills without reconciling???

Who among us has not spent on their (Company or business) credit card for personal use? I know that when hubby uses his credit card, I go through the amounts and allocate business or personal. We don't pay any interst as the card is paid off in full each month, as i am sure Craig Thompsons' one was, so it is not as if we are claiming interst as a business expense.

Surely in these large organisations, the accounts department have SOME blame when these things happen? If there were suspect transactions why was this not dealt with in the month it happened?

He's a NSW ex-union lawyer promoted up the food chain to be a Labor MP.....what did you expect ??

There's plenty more where that came from.

I'm sure there are a few good apples in and amongst those rotten barrels....but you'd be hard pressed to find them.

Anyone who painfully sat through his drivel speech in Parliament back in 2011 where he dribbled and shook and cried his way through 58 minutes of utter lies and nonsense.....well, we all knew today was coming.

This is just scratching the surface. Remember the term - former union lawyer. I could list them all off, it would be a who's who in the Labor Party....but I couldn't be bothered.

Moyjos - if you are asking questions like that - you clearly have no idea how Unions work.

Nope I dont :) I just know how accounting/bookkeeping works :)

I had the same questions over slippery Pete's cabcharge debarcle. Some flunky in the accounts department just blindly signs cheques?? THAT is a bigger problem that I see when it is tax payer or union memebr funds being mis-used

If I did that with our own card as a small business...the ATO would be up our rear end with a microscope

There must be something about the Central Coast.

The state member for Robertson is under investigation by ICAC now as well, for a different matter.

There will be some happy local members of the ALP who fought long and hard against him being parachuted in. They could see this coming long ago. There was a great local candidate who was ignored in favour of a union hack, and now the ALP is a dirty word in the seat.

Apparently he just wrote and signed memos stating the purchases were business related instead of producing receipts...

But have a read of some of what went on... the term "thundering incompetence" springs to mind.

None of this excuses his actions though. You can't blame an incompetent accounting department for someone breaking the law.

We have them in Perth too, I reckon this guy is the master, his out of harms way at the moment... I think. Of course, forgot his wife is a poli, she got embroiled in some scandal a while back, relating to money again.

They know how to work the gravy train

Though I have not had the (dis) pleasure of working for a union I have worked at most levels of government. The issue would appear to be a lack of probity in the union and no rigor in the accounts area.

Bean counters don't just sit back and swallow the dog ate my receipts stories regardless of who in the organization it is.

He was obviously aware of the rort and took it to the max.

I'd have thought the issue was the fraud and theft of union members' funds.

I think that is exactly what they have done.

It depends on the culture of the organisation. I would imagine that someone in the accounts dept has questioned the expenses, and has been told to 'not ask too many questions'.

no surprise there, good. What amazes me is that he didn't think somewhere down the line he wouldn't get caught? Come on, using escort services and booking it to your company credit card, silly silly man.

good riddance and let this serve as a warning to others who are doing the same to this day.

It's a good day for the hard working HSU members who got defrauded, just a shame it took 6 plus years to come to light. Lawyers and barristers sure know how to duck and weave and drag it out as long as possible.

Now, let's see him pay all of the members' money back.

And for the rank and file ALP members in Dobell who wanted a solid local candidate, not a union hack.

Me thinks they will still get Union stooges.

On a side note, it looks like we are going to get a new senate election here in WA, i wonder who the ALP has as their number 1 ticket holder?.
