Why Japan, what's wrong with Aussie servers..?

Too expensive.

The VPS provider I use (Linode) currently has data centres in Tokyo, London, Newark (New Jersey), Atlanta, Dallas and Fremont (California).

I did extensive testing before I moved the site and found that Tokyo gave by far the best response times and data transfer rates.

I do use Amazon Cloudfront CDN for hosting static assets - they have an Australian end-point, which greatly improves access times for those files, but I haven't yet optimised Somersoft to use it ... I'll wait until I build v4 which will be much easier to integrate into Cloudfront.

Thanks Sim.;)

So it was a valid question...lucky as I have no idea what you just said.

But thanks anyway. Im off to the tellie, too hard to navigate SS now.

If you are interested and want to test download speeds from the various Linode datacentres - visit this page: https://www.linode.com/speedtest/

They have 100MB files hosted in each data centre that you can download and compare the performance. Make sure you use a download program which reports download speeds - most web browsers don't tell you the details once the download has finished.

I used wget - http://downloads.sourceforge.net/gnuwin32/wget-1.11.4-1-setup.exe

C:\Users\Simon>wget http://speedtest.tokyo.linode.com/100MB-tokyo.bin

104,857,600 1.00M/s in 89s

2013-05-29 19:56:45 (1.12 MB/s)

... 89s to download 100MB from Tokyo on Internode Naked ADSL2+ in Sydney

Obviously you will be limited by the maximum data transfer rate of your internet connection - but it still can be useful to test relative transfer rates from different network locations on your own link. I suggest you compare Tokyo, Fremont and Dallas.

soooooooooooo what can be done to fix this. This is a very new problem? What has changsd?

It is a network congestion problem, primarily on Telstra network.

You need to contact Telstra support and ask them to look into it (good luck with that!).

I'm continuing to investigate - but honestly, the servers are running extremely well - my monitoring data shows no changes in traffic levels or server load, and they load just as fast for me as at any other time of the day.

I recently implemented Pingdom Real User Monitoring which uses a bit of JavaScript to do some tracking of everyone using the site and reports back on the actual page load times they are experiencing.

I am not seeing a significant increase in page load times at this time of night - indeed it seems to drop off a little.

So far today, 77% of users are experiencing less than 4s page load times, 18% experience load times of 4 - 16 seconds, and only 5% are experiencing load times of greater than 16 seconds.

I will note that there seems to be a percentage of users who are experiencing more than 20 second load times - I'm guessing some of you guys fall into this category. See attached file for graph of page load times. The overall median is still only 1.8s, so there doesn't seem to be a problem for the majority of users.

I've seen reports on other forums (unrelated to me) of complaints about slow performance in the evenings - when I checked their IP address, turns out they are also hosted in Linode Tokyo (different server, same data centre).

It really is a network problem - something which needs to be fixed at your ISP ... it's not a data centre or server problem.

Probs with SS - me too.

Yes Bigpond User - but no issues with other sites. Just SS

Is taking over 5 mins at times and still page not loaded. Sometimes it loads 2 replies and stops

Most likely this feedback won't go through either

I've asked Linode for some assistance and they suggested sending in more detailed traceroute information using a program called MTR.

If you have experiencing speed issues on Somersoft (and ONLY if you are experiencing problems please!), can you download and run this program and send me the results so I can forward them on to Linode tech support?

You can download WinMTR for Windows here: http://winmtr.net/download-winmtr/ ... no need to install, just extract the relevant version of the file from the zip and run it, enter somersoft.com or prod1.hampelgroup.net as the host and click Start. Let it do at least 10 runs ("Sent" column shows number of sent requests), then stop it and copy the text and paste it in a reply here.

If you're running a Mac OS X workstation, you may install MTR from MacPorts by issuing the following command: port install mtr

If you are on Linux - check out the instructions here: https://library.linode.com/linux-tools/mtr

If it is slow again later tonight, I would appreciate some WinMTR reports to send to Linode - alternatively if still fast, it would be good to have that feedback as well.

Someone on Whirlpool suggested that the problem might be with the internet provider KDDI in Japan - it is quite possible that they were experiencing severe latency problems and have since upgraded their capacity or changed something to fix the problem.
