Liberals - policies may cause a recession??

HE....I am happy to have productive discussions and willing to look at differing opinions...but don't want to debate without facts.

As for not going into a recession...I suspect that Victoria, South Australia, and Hobart will probably hover aorund zero growth if all the job cuts filter in.

Believe or not...the state with the strongest performance is likely to be NSW following by WA and Qld.

sash - was that really necessary? The latter half of your sentence is diametrically opposed to the first half and a smiley face doesn't make up for it. I've got no problem with getting stuck into serving politicians for whatever you want to disagree with them about - it's part of their job description - but I draw the line at getting stuck into private citizens who had a red hot go but didn't make it.

If you don't want to hear people's opinions then don't post. If you do, then expect a wide diversity of opinion. You can't have it both ways - if you only want to listen to people who agree with you then it's your loss.

BTW, with 1.8% population growth per annum, per capita GDP would have to shrink by more than that figure over two consecutive quarters to qualify for a recession. While we do have challenges associated with the wind down in the investment boom, we are only just entering a production boom so it's pretty hard to see that happening.

A small mining tax will not hurt anyone. The other thing is to increase GST by another 1%....and reduce company and payroll taxes.

Increase mining tax, reduce income/business tax or invest in infrastructure for future generations so we're not reliant only on 1 industry.

Posted this in another thread today Sash

Victoria not far off recession, if not already in one!!

i completely agree with this.

although ive disagreed with him on a few issues in the past i greatly admire the fact that he gave it a good go, most people are happy doing nothing and whinging from the sidelines.

PGUY, I have one word for you, "green".

Okay a few more, "socialist" "communist" and some double barreled ones: "bleeding-heart" , shall I go on?

Happy Friday bwaaaahhahahaha

Just thinking....asylum seekers could instead head to India, where they could work in call centres and save enough money to train as commercial pilots.

Then, now this is the beauty of this idea, they could could fly plane loads over to Oz and the Navy could do stuff all about it (they don't have surface to air missiles)! The planes could even have a picture of the flying kangaroo on the tail!

or we could relax our immigration policy and accept more from other countries, Australians aren't exactly making babies at any fast rate these days.

Yes....plenty of people I know do exactly this...whether it is politics...or taking action...it is true.....

The funniest one I heard is from a single teacher who is ready to retire..she just hit 65. She has assets worth over $1.3m.....yet she moans about that she won't have enough money to have a comfortable retirement. She is a english teacher and constantly harps on about numbers not being her forte and she gets angry as to why the government should not be looking after her comfortably in retirement.

I showed her a way to rearrange and structure her finances where she will have her her unit paid off, her super returning about 22k tax free and she qualifying gor about 19k in government super. This will give her a net income of $41k income tax free plus all discounts available to pensioners...that is about 5k in savings. Her current income is 78k and she nets about 55k as she contributes extra super.

The difference in her standard of liviing is only 9k...which she can easily make by doing some relief teaching or english tutoring..

Has she done anything...nothing...nada..zilch!

most people are happy doing nothing and whinging from the sidelines.

Not at all! ;) They will have to work for their money. Everyone should. What colour does that make me? :D

Well, someone's got to prop up the tax system. You do realise our current tax system is a pyramid scheme, don't you?

Pyramid scheme? Well we're at the top of the food chain. Hate paying the highest tax rate in the country, but grateful we live such a good life, and we still have 3 World Vision kids and donate a load to charity ... but since Libs got in, I have cancelled one charity, stopped working for free as a nice person does, and am about to get rid of all WVision kids.

Don't joke.....given how quickly Qantas is going to hell in a hand basket...and how quikcly our economy is dying due to high wages and low productivity....that maybe an options.

If the libs had it their way they might even outsource the Navy to India.

You have to be kdding that the navy do not have surface to air missiles....our nearest neightbour already have Russian SU aircraft which are far superior to what we have F-111 Pigs and to get F-35....pity they can't fly them as well..then we would be in trouble.

I think governments get too much credit/blame for how the economy travels. Given there hasn't been much in the way of wide-sweeping economic reform since John Howard's 2nd term of government one has to wonder why our politicians have become so timid and scared of offending certain groups.

Just as an example, why is the government having a welfare review, but quarantining the age pension, one of the biggest and fastest growing parts of our welfare system, from it's scope?

It seems once again as though the government will pick and choose who gets the pain from the coming downturn and associated cuts instead of sharing it around.
