What keeps your grey matter active?

No grey matter in this head it's maily deep red , ha ha.

Naa to be honest I'd love to be able to be worrying about grey matter but that's awhile off at my end unfortunately.

Bob Hawk reckons crosswords are great but I'd love to develop a chess routine myself , just need a partner.

Cheers

I play sudoku occassionally..... usually save up to do the samarai ones in saturdays paper.
But my work is very "brain power" intense... strategic planning/ learning new products/ investigating new markets/ developing training and marketing strategies, investigating recent research etc. So, I feel like I stretch my brain alot at work. If I don't clear some space in my mind, I find it hard to think strategically at work... I just get stuck in the day to day problems of the job.
So. when I come home, I want to clear my brain and get some space....... so I do Farmville on Facebook.. very mindless, boring and pointless..... but surprisingly relaxing. Kind of like Eddie McGuires "slow TV" concept.........

Meditation practice.

But I must add some clarification because some people misunderstand. I don't mean relaxation as such. The goal of (non religeous) meditation is to reach a state of high clarity. Like we all do from time to time. But to reach that state specifically as a matter of habit, rather than by accident. It'd be any state of mind which is at the one time, easily able to take in all perspectives (relaxed if you like), but equally penetrating or focusing. A Yin/Yang sort of thing.

The goal of any sort of practice is to form good habits, so that as situations arise, the good habits automatically move us in the right direction. For example a sprint runners 'dyed in the wool' habit is to explode out of the blocks when he hears the starters pistol. No time for thoughts about what to do, by the time he knows what's happened he's bolting already. So meditation practice forms habits that move a person in the direction of clarity, automatically, effortlessly.

It's like property investing in that a good teacher or mentor saves time, but good books are also solid. Though you may need time to learn which are the good ones.

Work (treasury dealer), Business (events director), study (chartered financial analyst program).

Another one is making sure I stay fit - physical fitness and mental fitness are very much hand in hand for me (don't talk to me until I've had my morning dose of endorphins).

Keep active by visiting the gym each second day, go swimming with the kids on the weekend, even at work I'll often take a break and go for a walk to stave off the mental burnout

Contribute To Somersoft (it's both active and passive therapy) :D

Brainstorm issues at work

I'll sometimes vary the route taken when driving to work and back

Completed a couple of courses during the year and plan to do the same next year

Best place for online chess is the internet chess club, or you can play the Shredder IPhone app which adjusts to your playing strength game by game.

Toastmasters is good for continually pushing the envelope of comfortable.

I do yoga and have started meditation/mindfulness this year. Great stuff for the mind and the body.

I've always swum, i do laps 2-3 times per week. Read books, business, marketing, self development, biographies mostly.

I study/research the stock market often. Love the challenge of business and investing.

Talk and hang out with my kids. Socialise with friends. Too much drinking this time of year. :D It all keeps you active.

Always researching and listening to music. My Alfa 159 & Triumph Bonneville motorbike. They're just a couple of my hobbies. Absolutely have a passion for music, cars and bikes.

A challenge will keep you active. Always be attempting to mildly push your comfort zone.

Also, you should look at yourself holistically. Mind, body, emotions all as one. What affects one affects all.

Keep your body active and your mind & emotions benefit. For eg. As your emotions go down so does your health and motivation etc.

Its all linked GG. Keep it all active and it all benefits.

I'm most relaxed on my bikes:

-Road bike with friends (cycling)
-Mountain bike with classical music on the ipod, flying over jumps, zipping thru trees on single tracks :D

My programming work is often quite mentally challenging. Occasionally my wife will see me laying on the couch staring at the ceiling and not realise I'm actually working. I do some of my best thinking that way.

My paid employment, have to use the old brain to analyse, organise, time manage etc. Love reading. I am always researching something. Drives my kids nuts, they will mention something and off I am to research it and critique from all angles.

I play the piano and jam.
repetitive complicated finger patterns and timing makes me relaxed and charged at the same time.

Especially Bach. he has fiendishly complicated music. its a real challenge.

i read the internets... if i find something interesting, i read into it.

I play with cars, specifically modifying them for stupid power with turbo chargers and aftermarket engine management (which i wire, setup and tune myself)

Also, i just keep my mind active, always looking at things and trying to figure out how they work.. hard to explain really, just my mind never really stops thinking.
