Diet, Exercise and Weight loss - help!

Alex, can I please have some of your motivation?

I just ate half a pack of tim tams

Now I'm just wondering where to hide them before James gets home...

haha. oh no

i used to be addicted to chocolate. I get my buzz from carrots now. wow who would have thought carrots can make you high!!!!!!! :D The same kind of rush as i used to get eating chocolate

I think because I am quite an obsessive kind of person I have been driven! I seem to go through stages of being obssessed with things. It was a band about 10 years ago, then I became totally obsessed with property, and now my obsession is with my physique. haha once I get a 1 track mind on something i'm unstoppable lol. :)

Ha!

I was never this bad, I went through stages growing up. When I was 16 all I ate at work was celery and carrots in a small tub.

I've never been good at "dieting" or eating, the only way I remember losing weight was by not eating or barely eating. So trying to do it the right way at the moment is a very big struggle and quite depressing.

Plus between work, skating and planning a wedding I am constantly missing meals and then eating whatever I can find a few hours later to make up for it and very rarely finding motivation to exercise or get off the couch...

Don't know If this will work for you or not but I had the same problem 4 months ago. Couldn't stop eating crap. So I started eating coconut oil and I've found when I feel like sugar I just eat a tablespoon of coconut oil and the cravings go. Not the greatest thing to eat but it has helped me. In 6 weeks I'll be posting my progress pics. Gone from 27 percent bodyfat to 18 percent. Next goal is 13 per cent by Christmas. I'll be a happy camper if that happens.

Good choice.

Cold pressed extra virgin coconut oil is really good for your health and heart, the doctors keep telling the public it's not.

Miranda Kerr who eats coconut oil daily, was blasted by the medical board and dietitians for teaching others to eat coconut oil daily...

I actually got onto it because my reverse t3 levels were through the roof. So I started t3 supplementation and coconut oil to get it down. Well that worked because my reverse t3 levels are back to normal and the weight has been coming off easily. The one I have learnt is that when people say don't eat high fat or you will gain weight they should be saying don't eat trans fats. My diet is high in coconut oil and fish oil and not only is the weight coming off but I was planning on having some cosmetic surgery to look a little younger and a few people have told me to hold off as they think I now look mid 30s. Maybe Miranda kerr is onto something.

Exactly. Trans fats or heated fats or vegetable oils and shortenings is what makes people fat, canola oil, corn oil.. all that rubbish.

We're trying the diet linked earlier which is a bit like what Coastymike said, its high fat. Coconut oil is one of the recommended ones, along with butter and lard. Cut out carbs/sugar as low as possible.

Very, very filling I must say, considering the volume of food. And VERY tasty :)

Will give it a go for a few weeks and then go back to more 'normal' levels of stuff when we've got rid of our respective pot bellies. Partner is going to have to reduce his carb levels longterm though, he's always creeping upwards.

Hmmm... but didn't you say it was SUGAR, not fat, that made you fat?

For you, breathing air will make you fat. :)

In case you find it hard to fathom, trans fats (processed and heated fats) cause obesity and heart problems by raising bad cholesterol and also cause cancer and other chronic diseases because they are carcinogenic.

Apart from that, sugar gets stored as fat pretty much instantly when consumed in larger daily doses, while trans fats slowly accumulate. So the big three you want to avoid are: sugar (sucrose), trans fats (vegetable oils/shortenings, margarine any heated oils), and simple carbs (white bread, white rice and potatoes).

PS extra virgin olive oil turns into rancid carcinogenic trans fatty oil when you cook with it.

THAT is the sole reason that we never have biscuits at home. If they're in the cupboard, I'll eat them. If they're not in the cupboard, I can't. :D

Exactly...you purchased them with the intention of eating them, so eat them and be done.

The guilts may just push you harder the next morning in the gym :D

How about those nasty sugars, especially high fructose corn syrup and things such as refined white flour ;)

There's an interesting book out by Gary Taubes " Good Calories, Bad Calories": Challenging the Conventional Wisdom on Diet, Weight Control, and Disease (published as The Diet Delusion in the UK) with a synposis available on the interweb

He's also written some other interesting books "Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About It" and "What if It's All Been a Big Fat Lie?"

On May 26, 2009, Robert Lustig gave a lecture called “Sugar: The Bitter Truth,” which was posted on YouTube the following July. Since then, it has been viewed well over 800,000 times, gaining new viewers at a rate of about 50,000 per month, fairly remarkable numbers for a 90-minute discussion of the nuances of fructose biochemistry and human physiology.

Lustig is a specialist on pediatric hormone disorders and the leading expert in childhood obesity at the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine, which is one of the best medical schools in the country. He published his first paper on childhood obesity a dozen years ago, and he has been treating patients and doing research on the disorder ever since.

With regards to coconuts and coconut oil, I found this an interesting read : The Tokelau Island Migrant Study

At the end of the day though, how can you ever hope to keep up with changing views on the subject by nutritional scientests, journalists, the interweb and ever evolving multinational food marketing companies

Then again Michael Pollan has a nice simple philosophy :D

Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.

Limit “empty calories” from simple carbohydrates like sugar
Eat a variety of vegetables and fruits
Choose low calorie density foods that are more filling
Limit meat intake
Limit salt
Keep looking for behavioral and environmental ways to change our calories-in/calories-out balance.

I'll also still go the gym as age and gravity fight youth and levity for supremacy within my mortal coil, exercise also has great cardio-vascular benefits as well as increases energy levels, insulin sensitivity and an increase in "feel good" endorphins....or so I'm told ;)

Skates its all about getting your perspective & responsibilities right - if they're on the supermarket shelf they're in your trolley, if they're in your trolley they're in your pantry, if they're in your pantry they're in you!

Who ever is responsible for stocking the supermarket shelf its ALL their fault why you eat them! ;)

LOL! I like that.:D

I'm still not going out and buying TimTams though.:D

I cant buy packets of anything because I end up eating too much of it or the whole dam packet. :D The way I got around this is to buy 2 pieces of licorice at a time if I feel like treating myself or a tiny handful of mixed lollies. Every few weeks I do this. Its good too because I dont have that craving for the sugar. If I did the same and ate a little bit of chocolate I'd be in big trouble and be hooked again.

So after being in a plateau for the past 3 months I finally broke through by eating 1800 calories a day with the usual heavy exercise. Was so happy. I am now in the 63's. Goal is to get down to 58 kg (127 lbs) by April 2012.
:)

I've lost 2 kg's in 1 month. Wow I cant believe it. Very happy. This can be attributed to a couple of things. I've been eating between 1800 and 1900 calories a day along with the daily vigorous exercise. I also am doing a new weights routine focussing on my core strength using a fitness ball and more of an endurance type weight training. The body has been shocked I reckon from such a new routine. I have never done these types of exercises before!

Along with losing the 2 kgs my tops are feeling looser. I look in the mirror and I can see pockets of my tummy missing. Indentations in the rolls of fat that I have left. :D So I'll try now to get to 60 kg and then re-assess from there. Good news is I'm reasonably content eating the amount I'm eating however am finding i'm a little hungry at times but I fill up on an extra coffee. When I'm happy with the size of my tummy and its looking flatter what I'll do is increase my calories up gradually by 100 at a time until I hit my maintenance calorie intake. This way I I'll be able to maintain the weight I am at.

I'm not sure how long the next 2 kgs will take to lose. When I meet with the pt for my next appraisal I think I'll get a new program and I'm also thinking of including body pump into my routine as that is something I haven't done. This im sure will have an impact. I reckon I'll do a spin class too. I'll keep with my 3 days a week running because that is working for me. I'm finding the interval training challenging and havent had the energy to attempt or want to do it so i've just been running instead.

Only problem I have to be careful of burnout and overtraining. I've been totally killing myself this past month to lose the weight and I've had great success but I ended up burning myself out. Usually I dont have any days off. I only have a day off when I burn out but this past 2 weeks I've had 1 day off a week. Perhaps I should do a long walk on my day off so as to prevent burnout. I could do 5 vigorous days and 2 easy/moderate days. I usually count my bike riding as an easy/moderate day but sometimes its soooo windy out there it turns into a vigorous activity.

I'm glad i've been posting here. This is kind of like my diary that I can look back on. :)

We got a 10kg block of chocolate in the mail the other day. Its almost a metre long. I don't envy anyone with poor discipline who ends up in our shoes :)

We're breaking it up into very small pieces and putting the pieces in a jar for the kiddies. They have a limit of 4 pieces a day.

APK,
This is not directed at you.

I just wonder how many over weight people realise that they should be hungry at least 3 times a day.

Being hungry doesn't mean it's time to eat..it means your next meal time is getting close.
