Dog Lovers

I have a small dog and never have issues with gas, probably because the fart is too small to matter

I feed some dry food (Black Hawk Fish & Potato, Earthborn Primitive), some canned food, along with rice, cooked meat and a bit of cooked salmon.

Hi dog lovers,

I made an enquiry at the rspca re:English Staffordshire Terrier(4yr old male)

21645

Has had ear and eye skin issues.

Has behaviour problems too ie:boisterous, doesn't like other dogs, seperation anxiety etc.Though i'm not perturbed as i'll train him.

Before i go down and check him out, anyone had issues with a staff re:ear and eye skin issues? This common for this breed?

Thanks :)
Not common that I known of! They can have sensite skin though. Eg allergy to grass.

Not with staffies but I found my boy seems to be allergic to strong cleaning products that they use in kennels etc.
It might not be that, though.
Probably a less stressful life will be the cure.

He looks sweet.

Thank Wattle for your response :)

I'm going down to check him out.

An eye problem that my dog had was entropian which is the rolling in of the eyelid - generally the bottom. Look carefully at deep set eyes to ensure that the eyelashes aren't rolling in and annoying the eyes - it can cause irritation, extra weeping, eye infections etc. It can be fixed by surgery but best to avoid a dog that has that.

There are plenty of staffies in the pound. I would steer clear of one who has health issues if possible

Thanks for your response westminster :)

Noted and will weigh up the health issues and talk to the guys at the rspca.

Everything mentioned above is quite common for a staffie. Ear, eye and skin issues aren't a big deal but honestly I'll never consider a staffie again because of the behavior issues.

They're great dogs in almost every way and the behavioral traits are what makes people love them so much. They're also very difficult to train out and what leads to so many staffies ending up at the RSPCA.

My Border Collie is 6.

Has always had Advance biscuits, morning and night. Never any gas or stomach troubles whatsoever. Same flavour, never changed, and eats it all every time.

She has extremely good self control with the biscuits too, even when there is 30kg being poured into a container.

Great looking dog Spades. Not sure about the eye problems but the skin could be from sun exposure? Prolonged time in the summer sun can damage the white/pink skin on the staffies.. Will he have shade? You can also buy dog suncream I hear? If you're planning a long day out in the sun.. Would be a pain putting on each day otherwise.

Love the photo of the Weimaraner, I was really keen to get one or a Hungarian vizsla, but we're now keen on the German short haired pointer.. Problem is they're rarely show up at the rspca.. May settle on a rescue collie instead :)

This is my dog on her 14th birthday a couple of months ago. I couldn't imagine a better dog. Makes me sad that we only have them for such a short period of time.

Always had dogs since a little kid.

The most challenging being the last one we had to bury.
A Jack Russell. Boy talk about action!
However, probably the funniest and fun dog ever too.
Had many a battle with snakes and was leading 7-0 before game over.:(

Always feed our dogs chicken necks mainly along with red meat bones and a small % of dog kibble.

However, our latest dog (back to the Border Collie) has had very bad reactions to dog kibble (several brands tried) with chronic dysentery with blood and massive loss of weight

Took her off the kibble, returned to normal.
Makes sense really, what would dogs eat in the wild? Yes, meat and the odd veges. Not grain based processed rubbish.

Never cooked for a dog yet, I didn't realise they could cook in nature?

Naw, she's so cute. The face reminds me so much of my Collie x Kelpie.

He's getting pretty old now, getting to be a bit grumpy and attention seeking. It won't be nice when he goes.

My dog Cookie from Carnarvon SAFE (Saving Animals From Euthenasia). No health issues, just a lovely dog who needed a forever home.

Hi Peter,

I agree where you say staffies ending up at RSPCA but difficult to train,it depends on the owner.

My ex-flatmate had staffies and had no problem training them.

He's given me some great tips.

His partner had a german sheperd too,he was spoilt by the partner(who passed away from cancer last year). He turned that dog around in no time and is now a bloody great dog,you wouldn't believe the change.

I've always had pets and with my job i've encountered heaps of dogs.
Work had me do a course on dogs, much of which i knew already.
Never been bitten while entering a yard, just a nip by a chihuahua lol, they think there 10 feet tall. You gotta know the signs.

Be dominant and don't let the dog dominate.

Here's a link on personality types:

Hiya vbplease,

The staffie actually looks better than the photo.

I was at the rspca for like 2hrs as they were busy.Anyhow took him for a walk,he responded to commands and i had him off the leash in an enclosure.

There were dogs next door and he went to attack,a quick jab in the ribs pulled him up,he never bothered the other dogs again.A tip from my mate.

Anyhow keep a look out for the dog your after, rspca say there busiest days are wednesday to sunday, when most dogs come in.Most people rock up over the weekend to adopt.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

After i filled out the adopt application they were questioning the size of my fence,it's 4 foot.

Too and throu to the supervisor and they come back saying would you be willing to extend it to 6foot,i said sure but nah i'm not.

Farout, concerned about a staffie jumpin a 4 foot fence when my ex-flatmates german shepered never attempted the 4 footer.

Anyhow this dog will keep me busy for awhile and help keep those peskie cockatoos away ;)

If you are interested in any of those breeds then contact the local club as they are often the first point of call for rehoming. The GSP club will have a rehoming person who you can talk to. Unfortunately due to lack of training, relationship breakdowns, moving OS etc there are quite a few each year who need rehoming.

That's great Spades - looks like it was Harvey's lucky day! He'll make a great dog if you're on the road and need some company - the right size and robust enough to handle it.

There are a lot of dogs needing homes out here in Parkes, too. Both of my dogs I just took. The beautiful kelpie-doberman-rottwheiler I took from the neighbour 'cause he kept him in a cage and never let him out. He cried a lot - it was heartbreaking. I started walking him and then just kept him.
A few months ago I went up to the pound and there was a funny little poodle cross cocker spaniel sitting petrified in a cage outside so I took her out and brought her home when no-one was there. She;s such a little cutie.
Have paid big bucks to get other dogs out before so felt justified.
Lots of dogs are used for pigging around here and don't have very good lives. They aren't socialised and are treated rough. As you said, it's the owners who turn them into monsters.
Staffies can be really lovely.
Princie - the big dog - is one of the most gentle and dignified dogs I've ever met (though very demanding when it comes to walks).
